Unraveling The Mystery Of Modern Potatoes' Origins When it comes to veggies, almost everyone can agree on potatoes. But despite its popularity, the common brown potato has a colorful history that some researchers are still disputing. Particle Emissions From Laser Printers Might Pose Health Concern Certain laser printers used in offices and homes release tiny particles of toner-like material into the air that people can inhale deep into lungs where they may pose a health hazard, scientists are reporting. Researchers classified 17 out of 62 printers in the study as "high particle emitters"because they released such elevated quantities of particles. Influence Of The Menstrual Cycle On The Female Brain What influence does the variation in estrogen level have on the activation of the female brain? Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Jean-Claude Dreher, researchers in France and the United States have identified, for the first time, the neural networks involved in processing reward-related functions modulated by female gonadal steroid hormones. The result is an important step in better comprehension of certain psychiatric and neurological pathologies. [Scary] Pregnant woman says 'maternal instinct' helped her kill attack FORT MITCHELL, Ky. - A pregnant woman who killed her attacker said a maternal instinct helped her fight off the woman who investigators believe was after her unborn child."I do believe that I fought harder because it was for my child,"Sarah Brady told ABC's "Good Morning America"in interviews aired Sunday and Monday. "It is a maternal instinct to protect your child to the very end."Katherine Smith, 22, died Thursday after luring Brady to her apartment to pick up a package supposedly delivered to the wrong address. When Smith pulled out a knife and attacked the pregnant woman, Brady fought back, striking Smith on the head with an ash tray and stabbing her three times with her own knife, police said. Brady, 26, said she didn't know Smith before the two met at Smith's apartment and can't be certain why Smith wanted to kill her."I really am not sure what was going through her mind,"Brady told ABC. "The only thing I thought was that she was going to kill me and my child and that is the only thing that ran through my mind." Stress Fast Tracks Puberty, Researchers Say Stress, such as that brought on by parental separation and absentee fathers, fast tracks puberty, say researchers in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. Certain Genetic Test Helps Detect Mutations That May Be Missed By Conv Researchers have identified a genetic test that when used with DNA testing would detect a higher number of genetic mutations in colorectal cancer patients, according to a study in the February 16 issue of JAMA, a theme issue on medical applications of biotechnology. Glimmer Of Hope For Tahitian Tree Snails'Survival Despite the mass extermination of Tahiti's unique species of tree snails in recent decades, much of their original genetic diversity can still be found in remnant populations that survive on the island, researchers report in the July 3 issue of Current Biology, a Cell Press publication. Species Extinction Could Reduce Productivity Of Plants On Earth By Hal A new analysis shows that as plant species around the world go extinct, natural habitats become less productive and contain fewer total plants -- a situation that could ultimately compromise important benefits that humans get from nature. Hirsute Or Hairless? Two Proteins May Spell The Difference In a new study, Elaine Fuchs and colleagues use a three-pronged approach--involving gene expression analysis, transgenic mice, and cell cultures--to study how epithelial buds, the precursors of hair follicles, form. Their experiments point to two key actors in a signaling pathway that molds a targeted cluster of cells into a hair bud. Toward A Cure For Inherited Eye Diseases Researchers have identified proteins in the rod and cones of the eye that could lead to the discovery of the genetic causes of a host of inherited eye diseases. The investigators hope to gain a clearer understanding of what goes wrong at the most basic level in these diseases that cause blindness and other disorders.
