Chemicals From Recycled Cardboard May Contaminate Take-out Food, Resea Diisobutyl Phthalate has been found in recycled cardboard sometimes used in food packaging. With take out pizzas, hot food is placed inside the cardboard box, and so there is a high chance that the food will be exposed to any volatile chemicals in the cardboard such as plasticizers as they will enter the headspace of the box, researchers argue. The phthalates (plasticizers) are present because the containers were made from pulp that contained at least some recycled paper and cardboard. Research Beyond Google: 119 Authoritative, Invisible, and Comprehensiv Annotated list from October 2006 of authoritative websites on the "invisible web."The "invisible web comprises databases and results of specialty search engines that the popular search engines simply are not able to index."Topics include search engines, art, online books, business, consumer, finance, government, international, law, health, science, and transportation. Librarians' Internet Index is listed. From the Online Education Database (OEDb), a site that offers reviews of online schools and degree programs. Genetic Defects Give The Immune System The Green Light To Attack The P Scientists at Joslin Diabetes Center have found genetic regions that, when defective, allow the immune system to attack the pancreas -- the first in a series of mis-steps that lead to type 1 diabetes. Armed with these findings, published today, March 22, in the journal Immunity, the researchers are now trying to hone in on the exact genes involved, in mice and in human patients. Wired Test 2007: Portable Media: Portable Media Accessories -- Gizmos From bottle-opening iPods, speakers that won't electrocute you whilst showering to iPodskins courtesy of the artistic stylings of Edvard Munch and M. C. Escher, Wired's got your gadget-giving whims covered. Researchers Develop New Method To Control Complex Systems When signals in complex systems -- like hearts and brains -- go haywire, dangerous conditions, such as irregular heartbeats and epileptic seizures, can develop. Researchers are seeking new ways to control such systems without burning them out. A team of researchers in chemical engineering at the University of Virginia and in mathematics at Hokkaido University has developed a new method for engineering the behavior of complex dynamic systems made up of large numbers of individual components. Field Of Beams: Novel System Uses Polarized Light Pulses To Reveal Cro By firing rapid pulses of polarized light at corn, spinach and other crops, researchers have uncovered a picture of plant health that is invisible to the naked eye. Using a portable light source and detector technology, the researchers can differentiate minute differences in leaf colors - indicators of over- or under-fertilization, crop-nutrient levels and perhaps even disease. Wine Drinkers Live Longer Than Beer Guzzlers A recent article in the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis determined that drinkers of wine benefit from its cardio-protective effects, more so than those who drink beer or other spirits, and may also live longer. The article is part of a series of papers published in an open forum on wine, alcohol and cardiovascular risk. Found: The Apple Gene For Red CSIRO researchers have located the gene that controls the color of apples -- a discovery that may lead to bright new apple varieties. Generosity May Be Genetically Programmed Are those inclined towards generosity genetically programmed to behave that way? Psychologists believes that this could very well be the case. Through an online task involving making a choice whether or not to give away money, the researchers found that those who chose to give away some or all of their money differed genetically from those involved in the exercise who chose not to give their money away.
