All Chronic Sinusitis Is Not Created Equal, Study Finds Not all congestion-producing, ear-popping, runny-nosed, headachy chronic rhinosinusitis infections are the same, researchers have found. Self-help Treatment For Social Anxiety Can Ease Burden New research suggests certain self-help treatments for social anxiety disorder may be just as effective as more traditional, therapist only treatments. With mental health conditions such as anxiety growing in prevalence across the globe, there is a critical need for more innovative, cost-effective and accessible treatments. Social phobia affects more than 200,000 Australians every year. Of these people, 80 per cent do not seek treatment. A new self-help treatment for social anxiety disorder is therefore promising news for both anxiety sufferers and mental health services. Global Climate Change Threatens Reindeer, Caribou Global climate change could threaten the most important terrestrial subsistence resource in the circumpolar north-- reindeer and caribou. Physicists Find New Explanation For Superconductivity's 'Glue' Researchers have identified an alternative explanation for the microscopic origins of the "glue"that binds electrons during high-temperature superconductivity. Wired Test 2007: Burning Question - How Hard Is Switching From PC to M Switching to a Mac is not as easy as just buying one, but Apple has brought the two platforms closer together so it's not the minefield it once was. We point the way to a smooth migration of data, e-mail, apps and games, and show you how to navigate the OS itself, which can seem alien to longtime PC mavens. Are Homosexual Civil Unions A 600-year-old Tradition? New evidence from documents and gravesites suggest that homosexual civil unions may have existed six centuries ago in France. Opponents of gay marriage in the United States today have tended to assume that nuclear families have always been the standard household form. However, as one of the authors writes, "Western family structures have been much more varied than many people today seem to realize, and Western legal systems have in the past made provisions for a variety of household structures." Molecular Pathway May Predict Chemotherapy Effectiveness A common molecular pathway could help physicians predict which lung cancer patients will benefit from chemotherapy drugs, according to new research. Known as the retinoblastoma (RB) tumor suppressor, this fundamental molecule regulates cell proliferation in the body. Research has shown that the RB pathway is either entirely inactive or altered in most human cancers. Scientists are beginning to use its actions as a "biomarker"for how tumors will respond to different therapies. Now researchers have found that "turning off"the RB pathway in lung cancer cells resulted in an altered response to chemotherapy agents and more cancer cell death. Scientists Unravel Molecular Motor's Ability To Pack DNA Genome Into A The life cycles of many viruses include a self-assembly stage in which a powerful molecular motor must pack the DNA genome into the virus's preformed shell (the capsid). How it manages this intricate feat has been subject to debate, but we know that the DNA passes into the capsid shell through a channel formed by a structure called the connector. Scientists have speculated that rotation of the connector complex might feed the DNA into the capsid as it turns. Refusal Of Medical And Surgical Interventions Common Among Chronically Chronically ill older persons frequently refuse medical and surgical interventions recommended by their physicians, according to a recent study by Yale School of Medicine researchers. The study suggests that physicians continue to recommend invasive or risky interventions for people with advanced illness despite the patient's view that these treatments may be too burdensome, or that the treatment doesn't fit with their goals of care. Widespread Arctic Warming Crosses Critical Ecological Thresholds, Scie Unprecedented and maybe irreversible effects of Arctic warming, linked to human intervention, have been discovered by a team of international researchers led by Queen's University biologist John Smol and University of Alberta earth scientist Alexander Wolfe.
