Ammonia-loving Archaea Win Landslide Majority
A genetic analysis of soil samples indicates that a group of microorganisms called crenarchaeota are the Earth's most abundant land-based creatures that oxidize ammonia, according to an international team of researchers from Norway, Germany, United Kingdom and the United States.

Cleanup Method Uses Activated Carbons To Anchor Toxins To Bottom Of Th
Imagine a Brita filter big enough to clean up San Francisco Bay. One researcher has a plan to clean polluted sediment at Hunters Point in San Francisco with activated carbon--the same technology in many water filters. He proposes to sequester dangerous toxins by mixing activated carbon, a type of carbon with a large surface area, into the bay's contaminated sediment.

Miscarriage And Abortion Triple Chances Of Future Low Birthweight Babi
Women who have miscarried or had an abortion run three times the normal risk of having a subsequent low birthweight baby, suggests new research. The more miscarriages or abortions a woman has, the greater are her chances of giving birth to a child that is underweight or premature in the future, the research shows. Low birthweight (under 2500 g) and premature birth (less than 37 weeks) are two of the major contributors to deaths among newborn babies and infants.

Sex, Sugar And Metabolic Disease
Overweight children and adults have low blood levels of the protein SHGB, which transports sex steroids and regulates their tissue entry. Low levels of SHGB are a marker of the metabolic syndrome, a medical disorder that increases an individual's risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease. New research in mice and in vitro using human cells provides an explanation as to why low SHGB levels are a good marker of the metabolic syndrome.

NASA Satellites Measure And Monitor Sea Level
For the first time, NASA has the tools and expertise to understand the rate at which sea level is changing, some of the mechanisms that drive those changes and the effects that sea level change may have worldwide. Although scientists have directly measured sea level since the early part of the 20th century, it was not known how many of the observed changes in sea level were real and how many were related to upward or downward movement of the land.
