A Common Bacterium Leads To Serious Blood Infection In Many Seniors, N
A new study finds that E. coli bacteremia -- a potentially life-threatening bloodstream infection caused by a common bacteria also associated with less dangerous urinary tract infections -- poses a significant public health threat in the United States, especially among seniors. The study, published by Group Health researchers in the May issue of the Journal of Infectious Diseases, finds E.coli bacteremia may affect as many as 53,000 non-institutionalized people, aged 65 and older, each year.

New Finding About Alcohol And Sleep
New research about how alcohol affects sleep could lead to medications to address a common reason some alcoholics go back to drinking -- disturbed sleep when they try to stop. The work was reported today by researchers from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in San Diego.

Preventing youth smoking could take a village or a neighborhood. Church and school activities may help reduce smoking among youth in disadvantaged areas, according to a new survey. African-American youths reported less cigarette use overall than white youths. Across racial lines however, young people involved in extracurricular school activities or programs at church were less likely to smoke even though they were exposed to same neighborhood risks as the smokers.
