Virginia Tech Engineer Investigates Enzyme Link To Neurological Diseas
Two Virginia Tech engineers are evaluating specific therapies to fight abnormally high protein binding that can cause neurological disorders.

Newly Identified Gene Cluster On Mouse X Chromosome Provides Insights
Researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center have discovered a cluster of 12 genes on the X chromosome in mice that appears to play an important role in reproduction. Reporting in the journal Cell, the scientists showed that knocking out just one of the genes resulted in reduced fertility in male mice.

Research: Florida Getting Better At Protecting Homes From Hurricanes
New Florida homes withstood last year's four hurricanes better than their older counterparts -- thanks in large measure to continued improvements in the state's hurricane building code, say University of Florida engineers.

Prematurity More Accurately Predicted By Advances In Proteomic Technol
Abnormal proteins in amniotic fluid that signal a higher risk of delivering prematurely are being detected with increasing accuracy by Yale School of Medicine researchers who presented their work in two abstracts at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Conference February 8 in San Francisco.

Why We May Feel Guilty
New research suggests that although it feels bad, guilt plays a critical role in promoting prosocial behavior. That worried feeling in our gut often serves as the impetus for our stab at redemption. However, psychologists have trouble agreeing on the function of this complex emotion. On one hand, the punitive feeling of guilt may keep you from repeating the same transgressive behavior in the future, which psychologists call "withdrawal motivation."Conversely, some researchers view the function of guilt in a societal context, in that; it keeps people's behavior in line with the moral standards of their community.

Hormone Therapy Controversy Raises Drug Safety Issues
The history of hormone therapy drugs -- once thought of as almost magic pills to keep women healthy, vital and young -- shows why it is so important to conduct research studies to identify the risks and benefits of drugs, say researchers from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Fluid Theory Confirmed By Foton
In scientific research, there is great satisfaction when theoretical work is eventually supported by experimentation. Such was the case for a team of Italian and US scientists when they received preliminary confirmation of a 10-year-old theory from a fluid science experiment that is currently orbiting the Earth on the Foton-M3 spacecraft.

SDSS Uses 200,000 Quasars to Confirm Einstein's Prediction of Cosmic
Applying cutting edge computer science to a wealth of new astronomical data, researchers from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) reported today the first robust detection of cosmic magnification on large scales, a prediction of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity applied to the distribution of galaxies, dark matter, and distant quasars.

New Process For Making Much-sought Iron Nanospheres
Using a process that creates bubbles as hot as the surface of the sun, chemists are reporting development of a new method for making hollow hematite (iron oxide) nanospheres.

Chemotherapy Drug Packs A One-two Punch
How cancer cells are killed could turn out to be an important element in activating a patient's immune system. A new study shows that one chemotherapy drug may kill tumor cells in such a way that the immune system can recognize the cancerous cells and help fight the disease more effectively.
