Forensic Dentistry Key In Identifying Victims Of Tsunamis, Other Disas
Disaster victim identification (DVI) is an intensive and demanding task involving experts from various disciplines. DVI interventions can be brought to a successful conclusion only if properly planned, involving well-trained key experts and selection of the appropriate forensic diagnostic tools.

Forensic Photography Brings Color Back To Ancient Textiles
Archaeologists are now turning to forensic crime lab techniques to hunt for dyes, paint, and other decoration in prehistoric textiles. Although ancient fabrics can offer clues about prehistoric cultures, often their colors are faded, patterns dissolved, and fibers crumbling. Forensic photography can be used as an inexpensive and non-destructive tool to analyze these artifacts more efficiently, according to new Ohio State University research.

MERIS Monitoring Tracks Planetary Photosynthesis Levels
Daily multispectral observations from Envisat's MERIS sensor are being combined with a sophisticated processing algorithm and powerful Grid computing to reveal global photosynthesis activity on land. This permits researchers to trace the state of health of terrestrial plant cover, identifying areas under stress and assessing damage from drought or fires.

Disaster recovery whitepaper
Until recently, most IT professionals have viewed disaster recovery as straightforward file recovery. As such, a nightly backup was the prescription. Things have changed. Businesses have to maintain continuous access to applications and data for employees, partners, and customers and downtime is no longer acceptable. Disaster recovery means maintaining availability without downtime. These days, disaster isn’t [...]

Getting into the Cochrane Library for free

Cochrane Collaboration

Today, I was following up a press release about a review of clinical trials. The analysis suggests that the cannabinoid receptor antagonist rimonabant could help people quit smoking without gaining weight.

The research was published today in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, a repository of clinical trials data and analyses that is an invaluable resource for those in healthcare, medical research, patient advocacy groups and patients and their carers, the medical media, and others. Anyway, more on the actual story later this month in the summer issue of Reactive Reports.

Now whenever I have needed access to information held in the Cochrane Library database previously, I’ve simply gone through the usual journalist’s route to get at such nuggets. However, the press release pointed out that Cochrane Librarypublications are also available entirely free of charge to particular groups and to members of the public depending on where you are.

Guest users can access abstracts for all Reviews in the database, but if you live in any of the following places, there are special access points through which you can get publications
forfree
get publications for free from the Cochrane Collection (either that or the country tag of your computer’s IP address gives you free access:

Australia

So, now you know how to get into the Cochrane Library for free. Of course, if you are in Michigan, Montreal or Moscow you may have to move house.
