Separating The Brain's 'Bad'From 'Good'Iron Chemists are developing ways to bind up iron in the brain to combat the neurological devastation of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. The key is to weed out potentially destructive forms of iron that generate harmful free radicals while leaving benign forms of iron alone to carry out vital functions in the body. Google Buys In-Game Ad Company A small company delivering ads to net-based games is being snapped up by Google for $23 million. Plus: Darwinia developer eyes consoles. In Game|Life. Coral Reef Remedies: Seaweed from Fiji Yields New Molecular Structures Researchers have discovered 10 new molecular structures with pharmaceutical potential in a species of red seaweed that lives in the shallow coral reef along the coastline of Fiji in the south Pacific Ocean. Some of these natural compounds showed the potential to kill cancer cells, bacteria and the HIV virus, according to research at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In fact, two of them exhibit anti-bacterial activity towards antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus at concentrations worth pursuing. Seaweed Curbs Stem Cell Tumors Australian scientists encapsulate stem cells in seaweed to prevent them from forming tumors. In Bodyhack. Wired Test 2007: A Classic Staple of '70s Life The Polaroid SX- Before digital banished those bad memories, there was Polaroid, whose SX-70 was the first mainstream instant camera to develop photos with no chemical bath — or film-peeling — required. Chemical 'Band-aid' Prevents Heart Failure In Mice With Muscular Dystr A common chemical used in the manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries can repair damage to cardiac muscle cell membranes and prevent heart failure in mice with the genetic mutation that causes Duchenne muscular dystrophy, according to scientists at the University of Michigan Medical School. The Nobel Prize in Literature 1949: William Faulkner Profile of novelist and poet William Faulkner, winner of the 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his powerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American novel."Features a biography, bibliography (listing titles such as "The Sound and the Fury,""As I Lay Dying,"and "Light in August"), Nobel presentation speech and banquet speech, video of the awards ceremony, and related links. From the Nobel Foundation. Researchers Discover Why Melanoma Is So Malignant If not caught in the early stages, melanoma can be a particularly virulent form of cancer, spreading through the body with an efficiency that few tumors possess. Now, researchers at Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research have discovered one of the reasons why this particular skin tumor is so ruthless. Unlike other cancers, melanoma is born with its metastatic engines fully revved. Bacteria From Sponges Make New Pharmaceuticals Thousands of interesting new compounds have been discovered inside the bodies of marine sponges. Over half of the bodyweight of living sea sponges -- including the sort that we use in our baths -- is made up of the many different bacteria that live inside them, in the same way that we all have bacteria living in our guts which help us to digest our food. As well as their attempt to produce useful pharmaceutical compounds on a commercial scale, the researchers believe that successfully culturing these little known bacteria will give new insights into evolution. Polluted Dead Star Indicates Planets Like Earth May Have Formed Around The chemical fingerprint of a burned-out star indicates that Earth-like planets may not be rare in the universe and could give clues to what our solar system will look like when our sun dies and becomes a white dwarf star some five billion years from now. Astronomers report that a white dwarf star known as GD 362, which is surrounded by dusty rings similar to those of Saturn, has been contaminated by a large asteroid that left more than a dozen observable chemical elements in the white dwarf's atmosphere. Such an observation is unprecedented in astronomy. Was there some kind of violent interaction between the star and the asteroid?
