Severe Psoriasis Associated With Increased Risk Of Death Patients with severe psoriasis appear to have an increased risk of death compared with patients without the skin condition, according to a new article. Psoriasis is a common inflammatory disorder that affects the skin and joints. Enzyme Critical For Early Growth Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Surgery is the only treatment for an abdominal aortic aneurysm, a weak spot in the body's main artery that dilates dangerously over time. If the vessel ruptures suddenly before surgery to repair it, a quick death is virtually certain. Now, scientists say they have identified a key enzyme that triggers chronic inflammation in the aorta and promotes the growth of aneurysms. Their finding raises hopes for developing a drug that could prevent small aneurysms from enlarging to the point where surgery is necessary. Protein Found To Protect Breast Cancer Tumors From Chemotherapy About half of women whose breast cancer is treated with standard chemotherapy have their cancer return within five years. Most chemotherapeutic drugs have undesirable side effects, but there has been no way to predict who would benefit and who wouldn't. Fortunately, new research findings at the University of Southern California could change that. Biology In Four Dimensions: Factor Of Time Gives Scientists Insight In Most things that happen in the cell are the work of 'molecular machines' -- complexes of proteins that carry out important cellular functions. Until now, scientists didn't have a clear idea of when proteins form these machines -- are these complexes pre-fabricated or put together on the spot for each specific job? Insulin Levels Drop With Progression Of Alzheimer's Disease, Linked To Researchers at Rhode Island Hospital and Brown Medical School have discovered that insulin and its receptors drop significantly in the brain during the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, and that levels decline progressively as the disease becomes more severe, leading to further evidence that Alzheimer's is a new type of diabetes. They also found that acetylcholine deficiency, a hallmark of the disease, is linked directly to the loss of insulin and insulin-like growth factor function in the brain. Brain Maps Online Digital atlases of the brains of humans, monkeys, dogs, cats, mice, birds and other animals have been created and posted online by researchers at the UC Davis Center for Neuroscience. More Plant Litter From Higher Carbon Dioxide Could Boost Carbon Releas A new study looks at a poorly understood process with potentially critical consequences for climate change. Emma Sayer, postdoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Jennifer Powers, an assistant professor in the University of Minnesota's Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior, and Edmund Tanner, researcher at Cambridge University, published the findings of their long-term study on the effects of increased plant litter on soil carbon and nutrient cycling in the Dec. 12 edition of PLoS ONE. [Ironic] LONDON: A jailed cocaine dealer is working as Santa Claus on John Tams, who dons beard, boots and red suit to work in a cafe's Christmas grotto, said he wanted to give something back to the community... [Ironic] An Italian pensioner committed suicide after his wife fell in Recalling the end of Romeo and Juliet, the 70-year-old man, Ettore, who had sat by his wife's bedside for four months after she slipped into a coma following a heart attack, finally gave up hope and gassed himself in the garage of his family home.Less than a day later, his wife, Rossana, woke up in her hospital bed in Padua and immediately asked for him. PET Can Identify Effectiveness Of Chemotherapy Early In High-risk Brea The effectiveness of chemotherapy in patients with advanced breast cancer can be evaluated earlier by using 18F-FDG positron emission tomography (PET) imaging over other conventional imaging procedures, according to an article in the July issue of the Society of Nuclear Medicine's Journal of Nuclear Medicine.
