Hubble Finds That 'Blue Blobs'In Space Are Orphaned Clusters Of Stars Hubble has revealed that mysterious "blue blobs"in a structure called Arp's Loop between M81 and M82 are blue clusters of stars less than 200 million years old with many stars as young as, and even younger than, 10 million years. Safe Water: Simpler Method For Analyzing Radium In Water Samples Cuts A simpler technique for testing public drinking water samples for the presence of the radioactive element radium, can dramatically reduce the amount of time required to conduct the sampling required by federal regulations. While radium is found at low concentrations in soil, water, plants and food, the greatest potential for human exposure to radium is through drinking water. [Ironic] LONDON: A jailed cocaine dealer is working as Santa Claus on John Tams, who dons beard, boots and red suit to work in a cafe's Christmas grotto, said he wanted to give something back to the community... Universe Offers 'Eternal Feast,' Cosmologist Says There is no such thing as a free lunch, some say, but they would be wrong. In fact, the entirety of the universe defies them. According to Stanford physics Professor Andrei Linde, one of the architects of the inflationary theory, our universe (and all the matter in it) was born out of a vacuum. 1981 Hunger Strikes: America Reacts This exhibit traces public opinion in the United States before and after the 1981 Northern Ireland hunger strikes. Kids Still Not Drinking Enough Milk American children are drinking too little milk and what they are consuming is too high in fat, according to a new study. Pacifiers Reduce Sudden Infant Deaths, New Study Suggests Use of a pacifier seems to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), finds a study published online by the British Medical Journal. Researchers in California interviewed mothers or carers of 185 infants who died and 312 randomly selected controls matched for race/ethnicity and age. Rapid Evolution Of Defense Genes In Plants May Produce Hybrid Incompat Species are kept separate in plants and animals through barriers to gene flow. However, the exact mechanisms of speciation have only been explained within the last 20 years. Scientists found that one mechanism, hybrid necrosis, is associated with a plant defense gene. Different forms of these rapidly evolving genes in parent plants can cause autoimmune responses leading to offspring inviability and may represent a molecular pathway to speciation unique to plants.
