Researchers Unlock Mysteries Of Toxic Metals In The Largest Contaminat
Copper mining in Butte and Anaconda, Montana, starting in 1860's, poisoned the air, the land, and the water; well over 100 years later, contaminants are still found as far as 300 miles down the Clark Fork River, whose headwaters are in that area.

Spitzer Finds Life Components In Young Universe
NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has found the ingredients for life all the way back to a time when the universe was a mere youngster. Using Spitzer, scientists have detected organic molecules in galaxies when our universe was one-fourth of its current age of about 14 billion years. These large molecules, known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, are comprised of carbon and hydrogen. The molecules are considered to be among the building blocks of life.

Genetically Engineered Bacteria Are Sweet Success Against Inflammatory
For the first time, scientists have used a genetically engineered "friendly" bacterium to deliver a therapy. The treatment is for bowel disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease for which there is no cure. The bacterium Bacteroides ovatus activates a protein when exposed to a specific sugar, xylan. The therapy has been proven to work in animals with colitis, one of the major forms of inflammatory bowel disease.

Lost In The Labyrinth: Decoding The Instructions That Tell Cells How T
Blood cells have limited lifespans, which means that they must be continually replaced by calling up reserves, and turning these into the blood cell types needed by the body. Claus Nerlov and his colleagues at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory unit in Monterotondo, Italy, in collaboration with researchers from Sten Eirik Jacobsen's laboratory at the University of Lund in Sweden, have now uncovered how an intracellular communication pathway contributes to this process.

Green Catalyst Destroys Pesticides And Munitions Toxins, Finds Carnegi
A chemical catalyst developed at Carnegie Mellon University completely destroys dangerous nitrophenols in laboratory tests, report researchers at the 230th meeting of the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C. Nitrophenols are man-made pollutants that mostly originate from wastewater discharges from the dye, pesticide and ammunition industries. Thousands of tons of these agents are produced yearly, and they are registered as priority pollutants by the EPA. Many of these compounds cannot be destroyed by existing means.
