Comfort Food: Chocolate, Water Reduce Pain Response To Heat People often eat food to feel better, but researchers have found that eating chocolate or drinking water can blunt pain, reducing a rat's response to a hot stimulus. This natural form of pain relief may help animals in the wild avoid distraction while eating scarce food, but in modern humans with readily available food, the effect may contribute to overeating and obesity. Nuclear-powered Mission To Neptune Could Answer Questions About Planet In 30 years, a nuclear-powered space exploration mission to Neptune and its moons may begin to reveal some of our solar system's most elusive secrets about the formation of its planets -- and recently discovered ones that developed around other stars. This vision of the future is the focus of a 12-month planning study conducted by a diverse team of experts led by Boeing Satellite Systems and funded by NASA. Genes May Tell A Lot About The Secret Lives Of Bees Despite the fact that bees are one of the most beneficial insects in the world, much of their behavior remains a mystery -- even to the apiculturists who tend them. To better understand such fundamental processes as reproduction, and cope with problems such as bee mites and diseases, scientists are at work on a state-of-the-art genomics resource. Study: 'Homemade' Gene Expression Technology Unreliable Technology for analyzing gene expression must be standardized among laboratories and across platforms around the world to support this age of human genome exploration, an Oregon Health &Science University researcher says. Otherwise, scientists using DNA microarrays, also known as gene chips, risk having their research results called into question, said Peter Spencer, Ph.D. He co-authored a study showing that labs using commercial rather than homemade microarray platforms and common procedures can generate comparable data. Sequencing Method Yields Fuller Picture Sequence data for both chromosomes, can be inferred under the right circumstances through a new statistical method developed by USC biologists. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) Website for this center that "supports research into our world's frozen realms: the snow, ice, glaciers, frozen ground, and climate interactions that make up Earth's cryosphere."Search or browse data collections, read publications and news, and view images of glaciers and icebergs. The Education Center section has basic information about the cryosphere, frozen ground, snow, and related topics. Tangled Web Of The Insect, Plant And Parasite Arms Race New insights have been made into the evolutionary relationship between plant-dwelling insects and their parasites. Researchers shed light on how sawflies evolved to escape their parasites and gain themselves an 'enemy-free space'for millions of years. EchoStar DVRs Hit a Roadblock TiVo sues in court, successfully, to force EchoStar Communications to stop selling digital video recorders that TiVo says infringed on one of its patents. In-home Sensors Spot Dementia Signs In Elderly An Oregon Health &Science University study shows motion and door sensors placed in elders' homes can help track activity patterns thought to relate to memory changes that are early signs of dementia. The study results, presented at the 10th International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders, show that continuous, unobtrusive monitoring of in-home activity may be a reliable way of assessing changes in motor behaviors that may occur along with changes in memory. Neural Activity Connected To Blood Flow In New Brain Stimulation Techn Neuroscientists have for the first time measured the electrical activity of nerve cells and correlated it to changes in blood flow in response to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a noninvasive method to stimulate neurons in the brain. Their findings, reported in Science, could substantially improve the effectiveness of brain stimulation as a therapeutic and research tool.
