'Wet' computing systems to boost processing power A new kind of information processing technology inspired by chemical processes in living systems is being developed by researchers at the University of Southampton. Two New Species Of Soft Coral Discovered In Caribbean Two new species of soft corals were discovered during a recent expedition to Saba Bank, Netherlands Antilles, the largest atoll in the Caribbean. Marine biologists collected 40 species of soft corals and nearly 100 different species of crustaceans in just ten days of SCUBA diving and exploration. One of the likely new species was found in deep water (70 m), and the other, surprisingly, was found to be common in shallow water (20 m). Are patients losing sleep over blood pressure monitors? A widely used test for measuring nighttime blood pressure may interfere with patients' sleep, thus affecting the results of the test, a new study reports. Dental Erosion -- Consume Pickles, Lemons And Soft Drinks In Moderatio Frequently consuming foods with a low pH value, such as soft drinks, fruit juices, pickles, fresh fruit and yogurt can lead to irreversible dental erosion, according to a report in the January/February issue of General Dentistry, the Academy of General Dentistry's (AGD) clinical, peer-reviewed journal. Important Factors Involved In The Synthesis Of Starch In Plants The classic model for explaining the biosynthesis of starch in plant leaves has been seriously called in to question. While to date the accepted belief has been that starch biosynthesis is produced solely in the chloroplast, biologist Nora Alonso Casajús' PhD provides evidence to show that the greatest part of the precursor molecule in starch biosynthesis -- known as ADPG -- accumulates in the cytosol of the plants. Similar Decline Over Decades In Cardiovascular Disease Rates For Peopl Adults with and without diabetes have benefited similarly from the decline in cardiovascular disease (CVD) rates over the last several decades, according to a study funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). However the study, which is published in the November 24 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that people with diabetes still have twice the risk of cardiovascular disease compared to people without diabetes. Oohs And Aahs: Vowel Sounds Affect Our Perceptions Of Products Would you drive a SUV called a Himmer? Phonetic symbolism refers to the notion that the sounds of words, apart from their assigned definition, convey meaning. A new article applies this theory to product names. The researchers find that product names with vowel sounds that convey positive attributes about the product are deemed more favorable by consumers by a two-to-one margin. Earth's Core More Complex Than Thought: Atoms Form Layers Of Spiral Pa It is hard to know what is going on over 3000 kilometers beneath our feet, but until recently scientists were fairly confident that they understood the way the iron atoms in the Earth's core packed together. However, new research has overturned conventional thinking and revealed that the structure of the core is not as straightforward as was once thought. New Research Ties Harmless Viruses To Cancer Research led by CSHL may link viruses that have been considered harmless to chromosomal instability and cancer. Comet Particles Tell New Story About Birth Of Solar System Particulate materials captured from the comet Wild two have revealed clues about the birth of our solar system that counter some of the basic theories that the solar nebular is gently collapsing inward to form the sun and the planets.
