The Secret Of Impressive Writing? Keep It Plain And Simple
Writers who use long words needlessly and choose complicated font styles are seen as less intelligent than those who stick with basic vocabulary and plain text, according to new research from the Princeton University in New Jersey, to be published in the next edition of Applied Cognitive Psychology.

First Significant Genetic Finding In Severe PMS, Or PMDD
The first significant genetic finding in premenstrual dysphoric disorder has now been reported. PMDD is a very severe form of the more commonly known premenstrual syndrome, or PMS. PMDD is heritable, affects 5 to 8 percent of women, and is associated with severe emotional and physical problems, such as irritability, marked depressed mood, anger, headaches, weight gain and more, to such an extent that quality of life is seriously impacted.

Improved device provides more rapid, comprehensive analysis of circula
Technical improvements to a microchip-based device for detecting and analyzing tumor cells in the bloodstream are revealing cellular differences that may reflect a tumor's aggressiveness and long-term response to treatment.

Stress In Elderly Linked To Low Birth Weight
Low birth weight children may be at a greater risk of stress-related health problems as adults, according to a new study. Findings from this study show that low birth weight (below the 10th percentile) can lead later in life to low concentrations of cortisol, a hormone that regulates stress response by adjusting blood pressure and blood sugar levels. An imbalance in cortisol can result in a host of common adult diseases, such as coronary heart disease and diabetes. This study indicates that there may be a link between fetal life conditions and adult disease.

Novel Genetic Finding Offers New Avenue For Future Crohn's Disease Tre
Researchers have identified a novel link between ITCH, a gene known to regulate inflammation in the body and NOD2, a gene which causes the majority of genetic Crohn's Disease diagnoses. ITCH, when malfunctioning, causes widespread inflammatory diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, gastritis, uncontrolled skin inflammation, and pulmonary pneumonitis. Researchers found that ITCH also influences NOD2-induced inflammation.

Why Christmas Trees Are Not Extinct
Conifers such as Christmas trees suffer a severe plumbing problem. The "pipes"that carry water through firs, pines and other conifers are 10 times shorter than those in flowering trees. But a University of Utah study suggests why conifers not only survive but thrive: efficient microscopic valves let water flow through conifers about as easily as it flows through other trees.

Probing The Microbial Universe The Easy Way
Microbiologists have coaxed less than one percent of the bacterial species that inhabit natural environments into growing in culture. But a new microfluidics device -- an intricate system of miniscule valves and chambers -- may help scientists who want to identify and characterize new microbes circumvent the need to culture them at all.

Scientists Detect Probable Genetic Cause Of Some Parkinson's Disease C
Two new studies strongly suggest that a mutation in a recently discovered gene is the most common genetic cause of Parkinson's disease identified to date. The discovery by an international research team provides fresh evidence that genetics may contribute to the development of some cases of Parkinson's disease.

Feb. 8, 1924: A New Way to Die
Lethal gas is used for the first time to execute a condemned man, in the belief that it is more humane than other methods. Compiled by Tony Long.

North Atlantic Warming Tied To Natural Variability
A new analysis of available records shows that while the North Atlantic Ocean's surface waters warmed in the 50 years between 1950 and 2000, the change was not uniform. In fact, the subpolar regions cooled at the same time that subtropical and tropical waters warmed. This striking pattern can be explained largely by the influence of a natural and cyclical wind circulation pattern called the North Atlantic Oscillation.
