Increased Vitamin B Consumption Reduces Women's Risk Of Colorectal Can According to a study published in the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA)journal Gastroenterology, women with a high dietary intake of vitamin B6 over several years have a decreased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). Women who consume moderate to large amounts of alcohol in addition to vitamin B6 have more than a 70 percent reduced risk of developing CRC. FSU Scientist Warns North Atlantic Right Whale Facing Extinction The North Atlantic right whale's future looks grim if the current mortality rates continue, according to a Florida State University assistant professor of oceanography Douglas Nowacek and a group of fellow scientists from across the nation. Unraveling kidney cancer: Mutations in the genome regulation machinery Scientists have searched for mutations in more than 100 kidney cancer samples, the largest number of samples from a single tumor type to be sequenced to date. They looked for mutations in 3,544 genes to investigate the complexity within this cancer type, which is typically associated with mutations in a gene called VHL. Despite this prevalent genetic signature, the team revealed substantial genetic heterogeneity, suggesting that a complex machinery contributes to the development of cancer. Mice Sing In The Presence Of Mates, Researchers Discover Scientists have known for decades that female lab mice or their pheromones cause male lab mice to make ultrasonic vocalizations. But a new paper from researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis establishes for the first time that the utterances of the male mice are songs. This finding adds mice to the roster of creatures that croon in the presence of the opposite sex, including songbirds, whales and some insects. New Potential Health Benefit Of Olive Oil For Peptic Ulcer Disease Already fabled for an array of health benefits, extra virgin olive oil -- a centerpiece of the Mediterranean Diet -- may have a new role in helping to prevent and treat Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections, which cause millions of cases of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease each year, researchers in Spain report. Obese Patients With Coronary Artery Disease Can Consider Bariatric Sur Mayo Clinic researchers report in the September edition of Mayo Clinic Proceedings that bariatric surgery is a safe option for treating obese patients who have coronary artery disease. Prehypertension Is 'On The Map' Of Cardiovascular Risk Factors According to researchers studying postmenopausal women in the Women's Health Initiative, prehypertension exists in about 40 percent of postmenopausal women and it is associated with a 58 percent higher risk of cardiovascular death, regardless of ethnicity, compared to normal blood pressure. Infection Puts Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants At Risk For Developm Extremely low birth weight infants--the tiniest category of premature infants--are much more likely to experience developmental impairments if they acquire an infection during the newborn period, according to a study by the Neonatal Research Network of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, one of the National Institutes of Health. The developmental impairments were seen regardless of the type of infection--whether it occurred in the brain, blood or intestines. Bacterial Pneumonia Patients At Increased Risk Of Major Heart Problems A new study suggests patients hospitalized with pneumonia may be at serious risk of new or worsening heart problems. Researchers studied the records of all 170 patients hospitalized with pneumococcal pneumonia at a Texas Veterans Affairs medical center from 2001 to 2005. They found that 19.4 percent of them had a heart attack or other major heart problem concurrently at the time of admission, and that the presence of the heart condition significantly increased mortality from pneumonia. Ayurvedic analysis I, like many with a chemistry training, have on occasion dismissed the more mystical-seeming strands of non-western medicine. The origins of homeopathy, for instance, relied on literal Bible bashing of glass phials to ensure the infinitely dilute remedies would work. Which of course western medicine says is ludicrous. Herbal medicine on the other hand needed [...]
