Scientists Link Immune Response To 'Ghost' Parasites And Severely Cong Although it's unclear why it's so, scientists at Johns Hopkins have linked a gene that allows for the chemical breakdown of the tough, protective casing that houses insects and worms to the severe congestion and polyp formation typical of chronic sinusitis. Old hay and Alpine ibex horns reveal how grasslands respond to climate To better understand how grassland ecosystems respond to a warming climate and rising levels of carbon dioxide -- particularly with respect to the plants' water use -- resourceful scientists have captured telling time series from the proverbially fleeting grass. Grassland researchers analyzed specimens of hay from the British lowlands dating back as far as 150 years, together with nearly 70 years of grazing as recorded in the horns of Alpine ibex, correlating these data with climate records. Some Brain Injuries Reduce Likelihood Of Post-traumatic Stress Disorde A new study of combat-exposed Vietnam War veterans shows that those with injuries to certain parts of the brain were less likely to develop post-traumatic stress disorder. The findings, from the National Institutes of Health and the National Naval Medical Center, suggest that drugs or pacemaker-like devices aimed at dampening activity in these brain regions might be effective treatments for PTSD. Past Illegal Blood Donation In China Linked To Hepatitis C Virus Infec Research in a rural province of central China has documented that illegal blood donation practices led to high hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection rates in blood and plasma donors during the 1980s and early 1990s, and that failure to screen for HCV in transfusion recipients increased their risk of infection as well, according to an article in the November 15 issue of The Journal of Infectious Diseases, now available online. Insights Into Anemia Control In Dialysis Patients Anemia is one of the most frequent complications of hemodialysis, and its correction is an important factor in restoring a tolerable quality of life to dialysis-dependent patients. Treatment with drugs called erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), which stimulate the bone marrow to produce red blood cells, have been a major advance in the treatment of the anemia (low levels of red blood cells or hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood) in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Oregon at War!: World War I and the Oregon Experience "This exhibit and learning resource consists of over 100 Web pages and hundreds of images and documents describing Oregon and World War I. It focuses on the lives of ordinary Oregonians and how they responded to the challenges of world war."Searchable. From the Oregon State Archives. Newly Identified Biomarker Detects And Regulates Spread Of Brain Tumor Researchers have identified a novel biomarker for brain tumors and have uncovered a potential role the marker may play when the tumor spreads or comes back after treatment. The biomarker, a protein known as "soluble attractin,"is normally absent in the central nervous system and is undetectable in cerebral spinal fluid unless malignant astrocytomas are present in the CNS. This newfound ability to identify biomarkers for malignant astrocytomas means physicians will have a minimally invasive method to track the success of treatments. Why You Don't Need Vista Now When Windows Vista becomes widely available next month, it will have been more than five years since Microsoft released a new operating system. So, is Vista worth the wait? By Bruce Gain. Stem Cell Bill Passes in House The House of Reps passes a bill that would allow federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research, but without enough votes to stave off a veto. In Bodyhack. Preventing Future Bridge Collapses: Protective Coatings May Hold Key In the wake of the tragic bridge collapse in Minnesota and last year's shut down of an oil pipeline in Alaska due to corrosion, researchers are facing increased pressure to develop better protective coatings to help save aging infrastructures. Protective coatings and paints, such as epoxy resins and polyurethanes, are designed primarily for warding off corrosion in metal-based structures such as bridges, storage tanks and buildings.
