Too Much Knowledge Can Be Bad For Some Types Of Memory, Study Finds
Sometimes knowledge can be a bad thing, especially when it comes to exact remembering of certain things. A new study found adults did better remembering pictures of imaginary animals than they did remembering pictures of real cats. The results show how some types of memory might be better when people forget what they know and instead approach a subject with a child-like sense of naïveté.

Long Term Antiretroviral Therapy Could Restore Normal CD4 Cell Counts
HIV positive patients who take combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) to combat HIV infection could see the numbers of CD4 cells in their immune system rise to concentrations found in HIV negative individuals, if they remain on the therapy for long enough and their HIV viral load load is suppressed to below 50 copies per ml.

Bacterial Bioterror: New Method Can Rapidly Detect Potential Bioterror
A new combination of analytical chemistry and mathematical data analysis techniques allows the rapid identification of the species, strain and infectious phase of the potential biological terrorism agent Coxiella burnetii. The bacterium causes the human disease Q fever, which can cause serious illness and even death.

Engineered Stem Cells Can Home In On Tumors And Deliver Drug Payload I
Researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center have perfected a delivery system for anticancer treatment that zeroes in on a tumor and becomes part of its supporting tissue. This new "cellular vehicle"then pumps drugs directly into cancer cells to disable them, but leaves normal tissue alone.

Study Finds Cardiac Toxicity Rates High With Use Of Breast Cancer Drug
The first study to look at "real world"use of Herceptin in advanced breast cancer patients found a higher incidence of cardiac toxicity -- 28 percent of patients treated -- than clinical trials of the drug have reported to date, but also concluded that the majority of this heart damage could be reversed with treatment.

Cicardian System Suffers And Protects From Prenatal Cocaine Exposure
Researchers have shown that prenatal cocaine exposure in zebrafish (which share the majority of the same genes with humans) can alter neuronal development and acutely dysregulate the expression of circadian genes and those affecting melatonin signaling, growth and neurotransmission. The circadian factors, including the principal circadian hormone melatonin, can attenuate the prenatal effects of cocaine.
