New Tool Makes Ultrasound Images Clearer
Scientists have developed a new tool -- an advanced imaging algorithm -- that is, quite literally, transforming the way we see things. The team has created an innovative method of signal processing that can be used with a broad range of imaging and sensing systems including ultrasound, RADAR, SONAR, telecommunications, and even a few optical imaging systems.

SDSS Uses 200,000 Quasars to Confirm Einstein's Prediction of Cosmic
Applying cutting edge computer science to a wealth of new astronomical data, researchers from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) reported today the first robust detection of cosmic magnification on large scales, a prediction of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity applied to the distribution of galaxies, dark matter, and distant quasars.

Land Clearing Triggers Hotter Droughts, Australian Research Shows
The clearing of native vegetation has made recent Australian droughts hotter. Scientists applied the CSIRO Mark 3 climate model, satellite data and a supercomputer, and showed that 150 years of land clearing added significantly to the warming and drying of eastern Australia.

Synthetic Viruses Aiming At Cancer Cells
Cancer and many other life-threatening diseases are caused by genetic defects. These so-called mutations prevent the affected genes from fulfilling their normal functions. Gene therapies try to make use of viruses for the import of healthy genes into cells where they can replace their defective counterparts. Newer approaches employ synthetic viruses which pose a lesser threat of pathogenic side effects. These "custom-made"molecular vehicles are designed in a way that allows them to bind almost exclusively to affected cells and leave out healthy tissue.

Neural Stem Cells Are Long-lived
New studies in mice have shown that immature stem cells that proliferate to form brain tissues can function for at least a year -- most of the life span of a mouse -- and give rise to multiple types of neural cells, not just neurons. The discovery may bode well for the use of these neural stem cells to regenerate brain tissue lost to injury or disease.

Gene Therapy Can Reduce Long-term Drinking Among Rodents
Certain genetic factors may both increase and protect against the risk of developing alcoholism; The aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH2*2) allele is considered protective against alcoholism; and Intravenous administration of an anti-Aldh2 antisense gene can curtail long-term drinking among rodents.

Lard Crisis: Mince Pies Threatened as Supplies Dwindle
This article reports on a November 2004 shortage of lard in the United Kingdom due to "demand in east European countries for cheap cuts of pork."The article provides insight into English dishes that are still traditionally use lard (made from hog fat), such as pastries and piecrusts, Yorkshire pudding, and potatoes. Includes brief data on lard. From the Guardian Unlimited, the online companion to the British newspaper The Guardian.

Solvent-free chemistry
If the water is pure enough nothing dissolves but everything reacts.

Face to Face: The Science of Reading Faces
Transcript of a 2004 interview with psychologist Paul Ekman, who is known for his research on facial expression and the development, with associates, of the Facial Action Coding System (FACS). Includes a few facial expression photos. Part of the "Conversations with History"series at the Institute of International Studies, University of California, Berkeley.
