'Speechless' And 'Mute' Help Break The Silence Of The Leaves
Researchers have discovered two genes that guide land plants to develop microscopic pores that they can open and close as if each pore was a tiny mouth. Without the genes plants won't develop any mouthlike pores, so the newly discovered genes have been named Speechless and Mute.

MRI Can Track Survival Of Pancreatic Islets After Transplantation
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with an approved contrast agent may provide a practical way of monitoring the survival of transplanted pancreatic islets. In the September issue of the journal Diabetes, researchers from the Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) report successfully tracking over time the fate of islets transplanted into mice using a protocol currently being tested in human patients.

Mending A Broken Heart: How To Boost The Number And Function Of Cardia
A current hope is that cardiac stem cells could one day be manipulated to rebuild cardiac tissue damaged by heart disease. Scientists are now addressing a fundamental question in the cardiac stem cell field, "What are the molecular pathways required for expansion and development of cardiac stem cells?"

Women And Arthritis Sufferers Have Poorer Short-term Recovery From Art
The factors associated with poor short-term recovery from knee surgery appear to be different than those found to mar long-term outcome from the same surgery, according to new research. Over 600,000 arthroscopic knee procedures are performed each year. Factors such as age, obesity, and amount of tissue removed are known to be related to poorer long-term outcomes. New research identifies gender (being female) and having osteoarthritis as two factors predictive of poorer short-term outcomes after arthroscopic knee surgery.

Gay Men Navigate In A Similar Way To Women, Virtual Reality Researcher
Researchers used virtual reality scenarios to investigate if spatial learning and memory in humans can be linked to sexual orientation. Differences in spatial learning and memory (our ability to record and recall information about our environment) are common between men and women. It has been shown that men consistently outperform women on tasks requiring navigation and discovering hidden objects; whereas women are more successful at tests which require them to remember where those objects lie in a particular space. This is the first study to investigate if those differences are also true for gay, lesbian and straight individuals.

Teaching Gutenberg
This site explores two topics related to the Gutenberg Bible at the University of Texas. The "Invention"section explores Johann Gutenberg's creation of the first book printed with movable type, and "Books Before and After Gutenberg"considers the development of written materials from clay tablets to facts about modern printing. Includes images, lesson plans, and a glossary. From the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

Penn Researchers Provide Recommendations For Artificial Nutrition And
For two decades, doctors have followed an ethically-established agreement about the appropriate use of artificial nutrition and hydration (ANH) for patients who are seriously ill or in a persistent vegetative state. The Terri Schiavo case -- which included very open, dramatic disagreements among family members over such considerations -- publicly challenged long-held agreements about ANH and caused many to question its proper use. In response to such challenges, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania's Institute on Aging and Center for Bioethics, and the Philadelphia VA's Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion review and clarify ethical principles regarding the use of ANH.

Treatment For One Of The World's Leading Causes Of Blindness May Impro
An inflammatory eye condition that is one of the world's leading causes of blindness could be treated much more effectively and easily thanks to a new discovery. In experiments with laboratory rats, scientists have developed a potential new therapy for uveitis -- the inflammation of the uvea, a layer of tissue that lies just below the outer surface of the eyeball and includes the iris.

Developmental Disabilities Life Opportunities Trust: Washington State
This trust, established by a bill passed by the Washington State Legislature, is "public-private partnership [that] creates a stable resource to enhance the quality of life for citizens with developmental disabilities."The background information, FAQ, and other documents on this site explain how the trust works to shelter and preserve "assets that would otherwise disqualify someone [with special needs] from government benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income and Medicaid."
