From One Cell, Many Possible Cures: Device Provides A Major Boost To A
A Florida State University research team in Tallahassee, Fla. reports that it has designed a biomedical device that will allow stem cells derived from adult bone marrow to be grown in sufficient quantities to permit far more research -- and allow faster growth of tissues that can be transplanted into patients.

Large-scale Projects in Berlin: Memorial to the Murdered Jews in Europ
"On 25 June 1999 the German Bundestag passed a resolution on the construction of a Memorial to the murdered Jews in Europe."This site features an overview of the project (which was completed in 2005) and its design "by the New York architect, Peter Eisenman, [which] marks a radical departure from the traditional memorial concept."Provides a video showing images of the memorial. In English and German. From the Senate Department of Urban Development, Berlin.

Supernovae Not What They Used To Be; Distant Supernovae Distinctly Bri
Exploding stars that light the way for research on dark energy aren't as powerful or bright, on average, as they once were, say astronomers. The study, which compared supernovae in nearby galaxies with those that exploded up to nine billion light years away in the distant universe, found the distant supernovae were an average of 12 per cent brighter. The distant supernovae were brighter because they were younger, the study found.

Deep Roots Of Solar Wind Help Predict Space Weather Across The Solar S
A layer deep in the solar atmosphere can be used to estimate the speed of the solar wind, a stream of electrified gas that constantly blows from the Sun. Estimating the speed of the solar wind will improve space weather forecasts, enhancing our ability to protect communications, navigation, and other satellites from the effects of solar storms. We will also be able to warn human explorers on their way to the planets of the severity of those storms.

Few Clues About African Ancestry To Be Found In Mitochondrial DNA
Mitochondrial DNA may not hold the key to your origins after all. A study published today in the open access journal BMC Biology reveals that fewer than 10 percent of African American mitochondrial DNA sequences analysed can be matched to mitochondrial DNA from one single African ethnic group. The current study suggests that only one in nine African Americans may be able to find clues about where their ancestors came from, in their mitochondrial DNA.

Physicists Discover 'Super Crystals'In A Semiconductor
Physicists have discovered that "super crystals"-- crystals which are hundreds to thousands times larger than conventional crystals -- exist in certain organic semiconducting solids.

First Detection Of Magnetic Fields In The Central Stars Of Four Planet
For the first time, a team of astronomers based in Germany has detected the presence of magnetic fields in the central stars of four planetary nebulae. Planetary nebulae are expanding gas shells that remain after Sun-like stars eject their outer layers at the end of their lifetimes.

Entomology Research Museum, U.C. Riverside
Website of a museum devoted to the study of insects, located on the campus of the University of California, Riverside. In addition to information about the museum, the site contains a FAQ about insects, "graphical descriptions including close-up shots and video clips of [selected] insects and other arthropods,"links to insect databases and holdings lists, and more. Also includes newsletters of the Friends of the Entomology Research Museum (FERM).

New Brighter LED Light Modules Developed
Newly developed high-output LED modules are based on perfect synergy between solid-state physics and optics. To use the light emitted by the LED chip as fully as possible, a special optic for the respective application was fabricated. It consists of two parts: a primary and a secondary lens. The primary lens collects the light emitted by the LED close to the chip and combines it to form a beam. The secondary lens homogenizes the light beam.
