Salmon Farming Threatens Chile's Patagonian Lakes The production of farmed salmon in Chile's unique Patagonian lakes has doubled in the last decade, contaminating them withnutrient pollution, invasive species, disease and harmful chemicals, according to a new study. Moving farmed salmon from freshwater lakes to land-based closed systems would reduce environmental pressures and increase Chile's competitiveness in the global salmon trade. Opening And Closing The Genome: Newly Identified Enzyme Orchestrates A A dynamic cast of gatekeeper enzymes controls access to the DNA for gene transcription, adding and removing particular molecules to open or close the genome as needed. Researchers have identified an important new player in this gene-control system, an enzyme responsible for removing certain molecules, or marks, involved in opening or closing chromatin, the material that makes up chromosomes. The activity of this enzyme is thought to be widespread, likely affecting many genes. Novel Medication Improves Ovarian Cancer Treatment A biologic anticancer agent that prevents tumor growth by interfering with the formation of new blood vessels (Bevacizumab) may have the potential to improve the efficacy of standard combination chemotherapy in ovarian cancer. Unique Recordings Of Brain Cell Activity Reveal Nature Of Narcolepsy, UCLA/Veterans Affairs neuroscientists have pinpointed the electrical "signature"of the brain cells whose loss causes human narcolepsy, and made the first recordings of their activity. Made in freely moving rats in waking and across the sleep cycle, these recordings show hypocretin neurons are active during excitement generated by positive emotions and by interest in one's surroundings.
