Caloric Restriction Won't Dramatically Extend Life Span In Humans: UCL Severely restricting calories over decades may add a few years to a human life span, but will not enable humans to live to 125 and beyond, as many have speculated. "Caloric restriction is not a panacea,"said UCLA evolutionary biologist John Phelan, who developed the first mathematical model demonstrating the relationship between caloric intake and longevity, using data from controlled experiments with rodents, as well as published studies on humans, diet and longevity. Molecular Spintronic Action Confirmed In Nanostructure Researchers at NIST have made the first confirmed "spintronic"device incorporating organic molecules, a potentially superior approach for innovative electronics that rely on the spin, and associated magnetic orientation, of electrons. The physicists created a nanoscale test structure to obtain clear evidence of the presence and action of specific molecules and magnetic switching behavior. Alcoholism And Excessive Food Intake May Share Chemical Pathways In Th Galanin is one of several neuropeptides known to increase food intake. Previous findings have suggested that galanin may also be involved in alcohol consumption and/or the motivation to drink alcohol beverages. Most recently, researchers have discovered that giving galanin microinjections to rodents can increase their voluntary alcohol intake. Their findings are published in the December issue of Alcoholism: Clinical &Experimental Research. Venus Express Mated With Upper Stage Preparations for ESA's Venus Express mission passed a new milestone when the spacecraft was attached to its Fregat upper-stage rocket. The mission is now only two weeks away from launch on 26 October. Scientists Create Autonomous Robots That Can Stand, Crawl, Wiggle And In reporting to NASA significant progress in developing "SuperBot,"identical modular units that plug into each other to create robots that can stand, crawl, wiggle and even roll, Wei-Min Shen of the USC Information Sciences Institute illustrated his comments with striking video of the system in action, video now on-line. Researchers Publish First Working Model That Explains How Biological C Despite the importance of biological clocks, their mechanisms have remained unclear. Now, a team of researchers from the University of Georgia has produced the first working model that explains how biological clocks work.
