Blood Test Can Accurately Diagnose Heart Failure In Emergency Patients A new blood test that measures a particular marker of cardiac distress can markedly improve the ability to diagnose or exclude congestive heart failure in patients with shortness of breath who come to hospital emergency departments. Telomeres And Cancer: Elusive Telomere RNA Subunit Identified In Singl Scientists have identified the long-sought telomerase RNA gene in a single-cell research model. Chromosomes shorten with every cell division. In stem cells and in cancer cells, this shortening is compensated by telomerase, an enzyme that adds short repeat sequences to the ends of chromosomes to replenish lost DNA. As telomerase is required for the continued growth of most cancer cells, the enzyme is considered a promising target for new anti-cancer drugs. A correlation between telomere length and a variety of diseases has further intensified interest in understanding telomerase and its regulation. Live Oak Trees Struggle For Survival In Growth Areas The majestic live oak is losing its battle for survival to suburban sprawl and the encroachment of taller trees, a new University of Florida study finds. An icon in American history and literature, broad-crowned live oaks thrive in open savannas but are dying off as they are crowded and overshadowed by the encroachment of taller trees, said Francis Putz, a UF botanist and the study's co-author. Accepted Notion Of Neutron's Electrical Properties Overturned By New R For two generations of physicists, it has been a standard belief that the neutron, an electrically neutral elementary particle and a primary component of an atom, actually carries a positive charge at its center and an offsetting negative charge at its outer edge. But new research finds the neutron actually carries a negative charge at its center and outer edge, with a positive charge in between. Researchers at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., and AeroTech Research (USA), Inc., Newport News, Va., have developed an automatic turbulence reporting system. Climatic Chain Reaction Caused Runaway Greenhouse Effect 55 Million Ye Analogous to the Earth's current situation, greenhouse warming 55 million years ago was caused by a relatively rapid increase of carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere. The study shows that a large proportion of the greenhouse gases was released as a result of a chain-reaction of events.
