Return Of The Staphylococcus Aureus 'Superbug'
Staphylococcus aureus causes a wide variety of diseases including boils and furuncles and more serious diseases such as septicemia and pneumonia, and a debate has long raged about the existence of S. aureus "superbugs"-- more dangerous strains that may be associated with particularly invasive disease.

Genes Linked To Suicidal Thinking During Antidepressant Treatment
Specific variations in two genes have been linked to suicidal thinking that sometimes occurs in people taking the most commonly prescribed class of antidepressants. Depending on the particular mix inherited, these versions increased the likelihood of such thoughts from 2- to 15-fold, a study found. About 1 percent of adult patients were deemed to be at high genetic risk. The findings may hold promise for genetic testing, as more such markers are identified.

Streamlining Treatment Of Heart Attack Patients
In the first study of its kind, researchers at Yale School of Medicine show how hospitals can streamline procedures to reduce the time they take to treat heart attack patients.

Women With Breast Cancer Have Less Dermatitis When Treated With IMRT
All women treated with radiation therapy for breast cancer are at risk of developing dermatitis -- a sometimes-painful skin condition caused by radiation as it makes its way through the skin to the tumor area and tissue within the breast. But researchers say women being treated with intensity-modulated radiation therapy are less likely to have serious dermatitis.

'EuroVacc 02' HIV Vaccine Trial Begins
The European Vaccine Effort against HIV/AIDS has announced that a phase I clinical trial of novel investigational vaccines comprising DNA-HIV-C and NYVAC-HIV-C for the prevention of HIV infection has started in Lausanne and London in February 2005. These vaccines are based on HIV subtype C, which is prevalent in China, India and sub-Saharan Africa, and constitutes more than 50 percent of the new HIV infections worldwide.
