Studies Examine Coffee Drinking And Risk Of Liver And Colorectal Cance
Two new studies in the February 16 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute examine the effects of coffee consumption on the incidence of liver and colorectal cancers. One study found that drinking coffee daily is associated with a decreased risk of liver cancer, while the other found no association between drinking coffee or tea and the risk of colorectal cancer.

University of Kentucky Is First To Administer New Anti-clotting Therap
Volunteers at the University of Kentucky Gill Heart Institute were the first ever to receive a new anti-clotting therapy. The drug and its antidote are being developed for their effectiveness in preventing blood clots while at the same time providing physicians the ability to rapidly reverse the effects of the blood thinner to help safeguard patients against uncontrolled bleeding. More than 12 million patients are prescribed so-called "blood thinners"each year.

Treatment with intravenous bisphosphonates -- drugs used to reduce harm done to bones by cancer or cancer therapy -- increases the risk of jaw or facial bone disease or infection, according to a large-scale comparative study. Researchers also determined that patients who had taken higher doses of the drugs over time were more likely to have experienced jaw and facial bone disease.

Tasers Used By Law Enforcement Are Safe, Review Suggests
A nationwide study examining the safety of Tasers used by law enforcement agencies suggests the devices are safe, causing a low occurrence of serious injuries. In a review of nearly 1,000 cases, 99.7 per cent of those subjected to a Taser had mild injuries, such as scrapes and bruises, or none at all.
