Adaptation To Parasites Drive African Fishes Along Different Evolution
Scientists have discovered that a pair of closely related species of East African cichlid fishes -- a group of fish whose diversity comprising hundreds of species has puzzled evolutionary biologists for decades -- evolved divergent immune gene adaptations which might explain why they do not interbreed, despite living side-by-side.

Mars Rovers Survive Severe Dust Storms, Ready For Next Objectives
Two months after sky-darkening dust from severe storms nearly killed NASA's Mars exploration rovers, the solar powered robots are awake and ready to continue their mission. Opportunity's planned descent into the giant Victoria Crater was delayed, but now the rover is preparing to drive into the 800-meter-diameter crater (half-mile-diameter) as early as Sept. 11. Spirit, Opportunity's rover twin, also survived the global dust storms. The rovers are 43 months into missions originally planned to last three months. On Sept. 5, Spirit climbed onto its long-term destination called Home Plate, a plateau of layered bedrock bearing clues to an explosive mixture of lava and water.

Methane Found In Desert Soils Bolsters Theories That Life Could Exist
Evidence of methane-producing organisms can be found in inhospitable soil environments much like those found on the surface of Mars, according to experiments undertaken by scientists and students from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and the University of Arkansas and published online in the journal Icarus. These results, they say, provide ample impetus for similar "biodetection experiments"to be considered for future missions to Mars.

Signatures Of The First Stars
A primitive star with extremely low iron content has been discovered by an international research team from Sweden, Japan, Germany, USA, Australia and Great Britain. This indicates the original composition of the gas from which the star formed had low iron content. The results are published in Nature online this week.

Data Show Cyclosporine Inhalation Solution Improves Long-term Survival
Data presented today at ISHLT show that cyclosporine inhalation solution significantly improves long-term survival in lung-transplant patients compared to placebo. The data show that, with a median total follow-up of 53.3 months, CyIS-treated patients demonstrated a continued survival advantage over placebo-treated patients. Treatment with CyIS was associated with a 69 percent decrease in risk of death compared to placebo.
