Nanotube-producing Bacteria Show Manufacturing Promise Engineers have found semiconducting nanotubes produced by living bacteria -- a discovery that could help in the creation of a new generation of nanoelectronic devices. [Scary] Pregnant woman says 'maternal instinct' helped her kill attack FORT MITCHELL, Ky. - A pregnant woman who killed her attacker said a maternal instinct helped her fight off the woman who investigators believe was after her unborn child."I do believe that I fought harder because it was for my child,"Sarah Brady told ABC's "Good Morning America"in interviews aired Sunday and Monday. Methane From Microbes: A Fuel For The Future Methanogenic micro-organisms could provide a clean, renewable energy source and use up carbon dioxide in the process. Methanogens produce about one billion tonnes of methane every year. Blind Humans Lacking Rods And Cones Retain Normal Responses To Non-vis In addition to allowing us to see, the mammalian eye also detects light for a number of "nonvisual"phenomena. A prime example of this is the timing of the sleep/wake cycle, which is synchronized by the effects of light on the circadian pacemaker in the hypothalamus. Rolls-Royce Acquires License To Use Iowa State Discovery That Improves Rolls-Royce Corp. has acquired exclusive rights to use a coating invented by Iowa State University researchers that helps turbines stand up to the heat in jet engines. The unique bond coating will be applied to engine turbine blades made of nickel-based superalloys. Those superalloys are designed for strength but need help withstanding metal temperatures approaching 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit inside the hot section of a jet engine. Customized Y-shaped Carbon Nanotubes Can Compute Y-shaped nanotubes with a metal particle embedded in them behave as electronic switches similar to conventional MOS (metal oxide semiconductor) transistors, the workhorses of modern microprocessors, digital memory, and application-specific integrated circuits. Babies Prefer Good Samaritans In the first evidence of its kind to date, researchers find that infants prefer individuals who help others to those who either do nothing, or interfere with others'goals.
