New Method Shows Mushrooms A Top Source For One Antioxidant Using a new, more sensitive-testing approach they developed for fungi, Penn State food scientists have found that mushrooms are a better natural source of the antioxidant ergothioneine than either of the two dietary sources previously believed to be best. Researcher Hits Bulls-eye For Antibiotic Target A Purdue University researcher has opened the door for possible antibiotic treatments for a variety of diseases by determining the structure of a protein that controls the starvation response of E. coli. This research is applicable to the treatment of many diseases because that same protein is found in numerous harmful bacteria. Astronomers Find Unexpected 'Heartbeats' In Star Astronomers using CSIRO's Parkes telescope in eastern Australia have detected radio "heartbeats"from a star that was not expected to have them. A U.S.-Australian research team found that a "magnetar"-- a kind of star with the strongest magnetic fields known in the Universe -- is giving off extraordinary radio pulses, which links this rare type of star with the much more common "radio pulsars." Anger and Stress Contribute To Coronary Heart Disease Prehypertensive middle-aged men who have high levels of trait anger -- a tendency to experience anger across a range of situations -- are at increased risk of progressing to hypertension and developing coronary heart disease, according to a secondary analysis of a large population-based study. [Ironic] Professional beggars prowling about the streets of Moroccan c The government plans to crack down on the scam used by faux beggars in growing numbers for a kind of "emotional blackmail", a cabinet minister was quoted as saying... Mayo Clinic Finds Kidney Disease Associated With 'Benign' Prostate Obs Men who experience signs and symptoms of a prostate obstruction resulting from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are three times more likely than other men to develop chronic kidney disease, according to findings of a Mayo Clinic study published in this month's edition of Kidney International. Rensselaer Researchers Develop Approach That Predicts Protein Separati Applying math and computers to the drug discovery process, researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have developed a method to predict protein separation behavior directly from protein structure. This new multi-scale protein modeling approach may reduce the time it takes to bring pharmaceuticals to market and may have significant implications for an array of biotechnology applications, including bioprocessing, drug discovery, and proteomics, the study of protein structure and function. Tuck Professor Uses Statistical Formula to Predict the Academy Award f This February 2005 news release (witha link to the full report) describes how a "professor of international economics at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth used a combination of history and statistics to forecast who will receive the highest honor in filmmaking."The "formula relies on three variables: a film's total Oscar nominations, number of Golden Globes won, and whether or not it's a comedy."From the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. Scientists Say No Evidence Exists That Therapod Dinosaurs Evolved Into No good evidence exists that fossilized structures found in China and which some paleontologists claim are the earliest known rudimentary feathers were really feathers at all, a renowned ornithologist says. Instead, the fossilized patterns appear to be bits of decomposed skin and supporting tissues that just happen to resemble feathers to a modest degree.
Clinical Trial Of Newest Technology To Treat Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms A clinical trial is underway at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) to study the safety and effectiveness of an endovascular medical device to treat life-threatening thoracic aortic aneurysms. Ronald Fairman, MD, Chief of Vascular Surgery at HUP, is leading the study at Penn and is one of 35 principal investigators in North America to participate in this landmark trial.
