Bats Use Touch Receptors On Wings To Fly, Catch Prey, Study Finds
Bats have an "ear"for flying in the dark because of a remarkable auditory talent that allows them to determine their physical environment by listening to echoes. But an Ohio University neurobiology professor says bats have a "feel"for it, too. John Zook's studies of bat flight suggest that touch-sensitive receptors on bats' wings help them maintain altitude and catch insects in midair. His preliminary findings revive part of a long-forgotten theory that bats use their sense of touch for nighttime navigation and hunting.

New Form Of Sleeping Sickness Discovered In India Stems From Deficienc
In December 2004, the first case of human Trypanosoma evansi -- induced trypanosomiasis was formally identified in India. Scientists from Université Libre de Bruxelles, Philippe Truc (IRD) and Indian medical specialists and the WHO found the cause of this infection lay in the absence from the patient's blood serum of apolipoprotein L-1 (APOL1), a protein that provides human subjects with their natural immunity against such animal trypanosomes. A double mutation on the gene apoL-1 turned out to be responsible.

[Scary] Pregnant woman says 'maternal instinct' helped her kill attack
FORT MITCHELL, Ky. - A pregnant woman who killed her attacker said a maternal instinct helped her fight off the woman who investigators believe was after her unborn child."I do believe that I fought harder because it was for my child,"Sarah Brady told ABC's "Good Morning America"in interviews aired Sunday and Monday. "It is a maternal instinct to protect your child to the very end."Katherine Smith, 22, died Thursday after luring Brady to her apartment to pick up a package supposedly delivered to the wrong address. When Smith pulled out a knife and attacked the pregnant woman, Brady fought back, striking Smith on the head with an ash tray and stabbing her three times with her own knife, police said. Brady, 26, said she didn't know Smith before the two met at Smith's apartment and can't be certain why Smith wanted to kill her."I really am not sure what was going through her mind,"Brady told ABC. "The only thing I thought was that she was going to kill me and my child and that is the only thing that ran through my mind."

Even Mild Thyroid Problems Double Risk Of Heart Condition
Individuals with subclinical hypothyroidism--a mildly underactive thyroid only detectable by a blood test--are twice as likely to develop heart failure, compared to those with normal thyroid levels, according to a new study. Heart failure, also called congestive heart failure, is when the heart can't pump enough blood to the body's other organs, which can cause fatigue, ankle swelling and shortness of breath.
