Genomic Variation Easier To Identify With 'Microinversions' Software Computer scientists at the University of California, San Diego, and Brown University have created a software system that more accurately detects "microinversions,"mutations that consist of tiny sequences of reversed DNA. The software gives biologists a powerful new tool to study genomic variation between and within species. The system is explained in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Aggressive Therapy Best For Certain AML Patients A new study suggests that acute leukemia patients whose cancer cells show a genetic change that usually predicts a swift return of the disease following remission may remain disease-free longer when given aggressive therapy. The findings apply to people with acute myeloid leukemia whose cancer cells have normal-looking chromosomes and a gene mutation called MLL-PTD. Beer Drinking Has More To Do With Brain Rewards Than Taste Receptors Different zests for beer might reveal more about alcohol's effect on the brain reward system than inherent differences in taste sensitivity, according to new research. In a study using mice scientists are attempting to map genes responsible for differences in beer consumption. Regardless of taste receptors, many strains of mice voluntarily consumed enough alcohol to become alcohol-dependent, according to researchers. Toward Improved Drug-delivery: Coating Gives Nanowires Easy Access To Scientists are reporting development of a protein coating that may turn nanowires into a new drug delivery system that could allow use of lower doses of medicine that are less harmful to normal cells. They describe use of the coating to enable silica nanowires to enter cultured human cells and deliver a lethal dose of toxin. The Powers Of Peanut Flours New Agricultural Research Service (ARS) findings about the thickening capacity of various forms of peanut flour will help scientists improve food textures. New NHLBI-sponsored Study Shows Programs Can Teach Children To Eat Hea Parents, take heart: You can teach your child to eat healthier. A study of preadolescent children found that those who attended a behaviorally oriented nutrition education program and were taught to follow a diet low in saturated fat and dietary cholesterol adopted significantly better dietary habits over several years compared to their peers who received only general nutritional information. Nutritious Frozen Foods Can Play Role In Weight-loss Programs Size matters when it comes to meal portions in weight-loss diets, according to researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. And consuming convenient, nutritious frozen dinners may be a way to control portion size.
