Can Fruit Flies Help Treat Stroke And Transplant Patients? Reperfusion injury takes place when an animal or an organ is starved of oxygen, then exposed to oxygen again. This occurs in strokes and organ transplants and causes many deaths per year. Now scientists have discovered that reperfusion injury can be induced in fruit-flies, a convenient, cheap, well-characterized model animal. Identifying A New Generation Of Byproducts From Water Disinfection California scientists have identified a "new generation"of by-products of the disinfection processes used to purify drinking water at municipal water treatment plants. Such compounds, which wind up in drinking water, are termed disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency currently regulates some as potential health risks. Temperature Sensing By The Circadian Clock Dr. Michael Brunner and colleagues have uncovered the molecular mechanism whereby temperature affects circadian patterns in the fungus Neurospora. Sleep Apnea Treatment Curbs Aggression In Sex Offenders Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects up to 20 percent of men in western cultures, five percent of whom experience significant physical symptoms. A study published in Journal of Forensic Sciences finds that sex offenders who suffer from OSA experience more harmful psychological symptoms than do sex offenders with normal sleep patterns. End Of Deforestation In View? Experts Advance New Way To Size Up Globa An increasing number of countries and regions are transitioning from deforestation to afforestation, raising hopes for a turning point for the world as a whole, according to researchers advancing a more sophisticated approach to measuring forest cover. The novel approach looks beyond simply how much of a nation's area is covered by trees and considers the volume of timber, biomass and captured carbon within the area. International Trial Of Novel Breast Cancer Drug A clinical trial of a new targeted breast cancer drug, led by physicians at Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, has begun enrolling patients. The TEACH (Tykerb Evaluation After CHemotherapy) trial will investigate the experimental drug Tykerb (lapatinib) in patients with early-stage, HER2-positive breast cancer who have not been treated with Herceptin, another targeted drug used for the same type of tumor. New Research Could Lead To 'Invisible' Electronics Imagine a car windshield that displays a map to your destination or a billboard that doubles as a window. Researchers have long worked on developing new types of displays powered by electronics without visible wires but have fallen short of developing the right materials. Now Northwestern University researchers report that by combining organic and inorganic materials they have produced transparent, high-performance transistors that can be assembled inexpensively on both glass and plastics. Unique Role For Blood Formation Gene Identified All blood cell production in adults depends on the steady work of a vital gene that if lost results in early bone marrow failure cancer geneticists have found. Their research reveals an unexpected role for the gene in sustaining the adult blood-forming system, and opens novel strategies for targeting the gene, which is often involved in a type of childhood leukemia. The Canary Project The mission of this project is "to photograph landscapes around the world that are exhibiting dramatic transformation due to global warming and to use these photographs to persuade as many people as possible that global warming is already underway and of immediate concern."Includes photos from New Orleans (after Hurricane Katrina), cloud forests in Costa Rica, glaciers in Austria, and other locations. From a travel photographer and a partner of an international investigative firm. Japan: Satellite Quake-Tracker A satellite-alert system launches in quake-prone Japan that will instantly trigger tsunami and volcanic activity warnings by siren and radio to help speed evacuations.
