Hormone Replacement Therapy May Improve Visual Memory Research from the University of Michigan Health System suggests that hormone therapy might help women retain certain memory functions. In a study in the new issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology &Metabolism, they report that a group of postmenopausal women showed more brain activity during a visual memory test than did women who were not taking the hormone therapy. New Lab Test Can Detect Costly Fungal Disease In Soybean Seedlings A simple, cheap lab test can unerringly detect Sudden Death Syndrome, a costly fungal disease, in soybean seedlings. Once commercialized, its use will help breeders produce SDS-resistant soybean varieties much faster than they can now. "You can do a reliable assay in the greenhouse in a plastic cup and four weeks later, you'll see the result,"said the biotechnologist who developed the procedure. "The seedlings develop the leaf symptoms and the root rot or they don't. It works every time, and the labor cost is very low -- about $1 per assay." Helium Supplies Endangered, Threatening Science And Technology In America, helium is running out of gas. The uplifting element is being depleted so rapidly in the world's largest reserve, outside of Amarillo, Texas, that supplies are expected to be depleted there within the next eight years. Distinct Genetic Profiles Found For Northern, Southern Europeans An international team of scientists lead by researchers at the University of California, Davis, Health System has found that, with respect to genetics, modern Europeans fall into two groups: a Northern group and a Southern, or Mediterranean one. The findings are important because they provide a method for scientists to take into account European ancestry when looking for genes involved in diseases.
