Tsunami Earthquake Location Included In Forecast The location of the Dec. 26 earthquake that unleashed a devastating tsunami across the Indian Ocean was identified in a 10-year forecast of likely earthquake sites worldwide made recently by researchers at the University of California, Davis, Center for Computational Science and Engineering. National Register Evaluation of New Orleans Drainage System, Orleans P 1999 report about the history of "the modern New Orleans drainage system [which] represents a unique technological solution to natural conditions that have played an important role in the settlement and expansion of the city. The system was designed in 1895, and construction of the system began in 1897."The report recommends selected pumping stations be considered individually eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. New Mechanism For Nutrient Uptake Discovered Biologists at the Carnegie Institution's Department of Plant Biology have discovered a new way that plant cells govern nutrient regulation--neighboring pore-like structures at the cell's surface physically interact to control the uptake of a vital nutrient, nitrogen. It is the first time scientists have found that the interaction of neighboring molecules is essential to this regulation. The discovery has widespread potential -- from understanding human diseases, such as kidney function, to engineering better crops. Corn Fungus Is Nature's Master Blaster Biologists have discovered that a common corn fungus is by far nature's most powerfulknown cannoneer, blasting its spores out with a force of 870,000 times the force of gravity. Farmers need not worry about being nailed by a fungal supergun, however. The infinitesimal spore travels only two-tenths of an inch (5 millimeters) before plummeting. Films Of Mitchell And Kenyon Illuminate Lefties'Decline In Victorian E By mining evidence from the classic films made by Mitchell and Kenyon, researchers have confirmed that the left-handed minority suffered something of a setback in Victorian England, at the beginning of the 20th century. In more recent times, lefties'numbers quickly rose again, the researchers report.
