Umbilical cord blood stem cell transplant may help lung, heart disorde Two recent studies investigating the use of human umbilical cord blood stem cell (UCB) transplants for lung and heart disorders in animal models found beneficial results. When human UCB-derived mensenchymal cells were transplanted into newborn laboratory rats with induced oxygen-deprived injury, the effects of the injury lessened. A second study found that UCB mononuclear cells transplanted into sheep with a right ventricular malfunction beneficially altered the malfunction and enhanced diastolic function. Three Long-term Diet Pills Show Poor Performance, Study Suggests A new study, which looked at the long-term effectiveness of anti-obesity medications, found that three drugs recommended for long-term use -- orlistat, sibutramine and rimonabant -- reduced weight by less than 5 kg (11 pounds). This equated to a loss of less than 5 percent of total body weight. Guidelines from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence recommend stopping the use of anti-obesity drugs if 5 percent of total body weight is not lost after three months. Ancient Fossil Offers New Clues To Brown Bears Past While nosing around the Quaternary mammal collection at the Provincial Museum of Alberta two years ago, Paul Matheus, a paleontologist with the Alaska Quaternary Center, came across a brown bear fossil that seemed out of place. The fossil had been collected by Jim Burns, curator of Quaternary mammals at the PMA a few years earlier near Edmonton, Alberta, in gravels that date to before the last ice age (older than 24,000 years). If this was true, Matheus thought, it could be a very important find. Venus Express En Route To Probe The Planet's Hidden Mysteries The European spacecraft Venus Express has been successfully placed into a trajectory that will take it on its journey from Earth towards its destination of the planet Venus, which it will reach next April. Venus Express will eventually manoeuvre itself into orbit around Venus in order to perform a detailed study of the structure, chemistry and dynamics of the planet's atmosphere, which is characterised by extremely high temperatures, very high atmospheric pressure, a huge greenhouse effect. Rust never sleeps, until now Dumb materials succumb to rust, but smart materials might be able to heal themselves.Researchers in Europe have devised a novel nano coating for metals and alloys that forms a very thin gel-like layer on the material. It's Not All Genetic: Common Epigenetic Problem Doubles Cancer Risk In In experiments with mice, a team of scientists from the United States, Sweden and Japan has discovered that having a double dose of one protein is sufficient to change the normal balance of cells within the lining of the colon, thereby doubling the risk that a cancer-causing genetic mutation will trigger a tumor there. Roughly 10 percent of people have this double protein dose as well.
