Exoplanet Reflected Light Detected For The First Time For the first time ever, astronomers have detected and monitored the visible light that is scattered in the atmosphere of an exoplanet. Employing techniques similar to how Polaroid sunglasses filter away reflected sunlight to reduce glare, the team of scientists were able to extract polarized light to enhance the faint reflected starlight 'glare'from an exoplanet. New Range Management Strategies During Climatic Changes Southwestern United States is known for its climate variability which has strong influences and impacts on range conditions. An experiential learning exercise was held at a meeting in January 2006 to open communication between land managers and scientists about climate and range science concepts. Participants explored potential plans for rangelands under changing climates. Fruit Fly Research Set To Revolutionize Study Of Birth Defects A Queen's University study of fruit flies that may revolutionize the way birth defects are studied has identified the genes affected by a widely-prescribed drug known to cause birth defects. Methotrexate (MTX), a popular cancer-fighting drug also used to treat psoriasis, ectopic pregnancies, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus, lasts a long time in the body and causes birth defects in children from women who have it in their systems. The study of the drug's effect on fruit flies has allowed Queen's researchers including graduate student Joslynn Affleck to identify the genes on which the drug acts. Once In The Doctor's Office, Racial And Ethnic Disparities In Care Nea A new study from the Stanford University School of Medicine has found that once U.S. patients visit a doctor for outpatient care, their race and ethnicity make little difference in the quality of care they receive. But the study also found that health-care providers have a lot of room for improvement when it comes to caring for all of their patients. In fact, it suggests there were only limited improvements in outpatient care during the 10-year study period.
