[Scary] Pregnant woman says 'maternal instinct' helped her kill attack FORT MITCHELL, Ky. - A pregnant woman who killed her attacker said a maternal instinct helped her fight off the woman who investigators believe was after her unborn child."I do believe that I fought harder because it was for my child,"Sarah Brady told ABC's "Good Morning America"in interviews aired Sunday and Monday. "It is a maternal instinct to protect your child to the very end."Katherine Smith, 22, died Thursday after luring Brady to her apartment to pick up a package supposedly delivered to the wrong address. When Smith pulled out a knife and attacked the pregnant woman, Brady fought back, striking Smith on the head with an ash tray and stabbing her three times with her own knife, police said. Brady, 26, said she didn't know Smith before the two met at Smith's apartment and can't be certain why Smith wanted to kill her."I really am not sure what was going through her mind,"Brady told ABC. "The only thing I thought was that she was going to kill me and my child and that is the only thing that ran through my mind." Changes In West Coast Marine Ecosystems Significant The California Current system has experienced significant changes during the past decade, resulting in dramatic variations in the ecosystem, characterized by shifts in phytoplankton production, expanding hypoxic zones, and the collapse of marine food webs off the western coast of the United States. These changes, driven by new wind patterns, are consistent with predictive models of global climate change. Interleukin-8, Key Marker For Colorectal Cancer Treatment Colorectal cancer constitutes one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. A German research group has shown that the expression of Interleukin-8, a multifunctional cytokine, correlates not only with CRC onset, but also with tumor progression and the development of colorectal liver metastases. The expression level of IL-8 might thus be a useful tool to evaluate the prognosis of patients with CRC with a high likelihood of impact on future treatment strategies. Workplace Pressures, Hazards Raise Risk Of Job Injuries In Youths Exposure to work hazards and a frenetic job pace increases the likelihood of injury among adolescent and young adult workers, a new systematic review suggests. Internationally Adopted Children Shed Light On How Babies Learn Langua Each year, about 40,000 children are adopted across national lines, primarily by families from North America and Western Europe. Although most are infants and toddlers, thousands of older children are also adopted. Jesse Snedeker of Harvard University believes that these older children can help us understand how infants learn their native language. Early language development follows a predictable series of milestones. Babies initially say one word at a time, and mostly use nouns ("ball") or social words ("hi"). As they grow older their sentences become longer and more complex, as verbs ("take") and grammatical words ("about") begin to appear.
