Insects Develop Resistance To Engineered Crops Cornell University entomologist Anthony Shelton finds when engineered crops containing just one Bt toxin grow near modified plants with two toxins, insects may more rapidly develop resistance to all the engineered plants. A soil bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), whose genes are inserted into crop plants, such as maize and cotton, creates these toxins that are deadly to insects but harmless to humans. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research and the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry recently revealed a technique for integrating membrane proteins into artificial structures. Protein Structure Key For AIDS, Cell Function Cornell University researchers have discovered the 3-D structure of a protein, human CD38, which may lead to important information about how cells release calcium -- a mineral used in almost every cellular process -- and also may offer insights into mechanisms involved with diseases ranging from leukemia to diabetes and HIV-AIDS. Dust To Gust: Health Of Brazilian Rainforest Depends On Dust From One More than half of the dust needed for fertilizing the Brazilian rainforest is supplied by a valley in northern Chad, according to an international research team headed by Dr. Ilan Koren of the Institute's Environmental Sciences and Energy Research Department. In a study published recently in Environmental Research Letters, the scientists have explained how the Bodélé valley's unique features might be responsible for making it such a major dust provider. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): National Priorities List ( Website for the EPA's "list of national priorities among the known releases or threatened releases of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants throughout the United States and its territories."On this site "you can locate NPL sites, check their cleanup progress, and get information on new and proposed NPL sites."Details about sites can be viewed through a U.S. map or a database of Superfund sites searchable by numerous factors (such as contaminants).
