UBC Researchers Explain Why Females Are Better Off Choosing Unattracti
In a research paper published in the journal Science, UBC zoology professor Sarah Otto and graduate student Arianne Albert propose a model that explains why males in some species have extravagant displays for attracting females, while males in other species look just like females.

Physicists Demonstrate Quantum Mechanical Nature Of Heat Flow
A hallmark of quantum mechanics is the wave nature exhibited by particles. A classic demonstration of this is the Aharonov-Bohm effect where electrons are sent along two paths that may be altered by application of an external magnetic field. By tuning the field, the constructive or destructive interference of the electrons is manifested as an increase or decrease in charge flow. Now Northwestern University physicists show that the conduction of heat may be similarly tuned.

New Model Of Competitive Speciation Unifies Insights From Earlier Work
Under which circumstances is sympatric speciation possible? An answer to this long-standing question of evolutionary biology has turned out to be challenging. In particular, models for the evolution of assortative mating under frequency-dependent disruptive selection necessarily depend on a large number of ecological and genetic factors. For this reason, most previous approaches to this issue depend on individual-based simulations. However, simulation studies with only slightly different assumptions have come to wildly different conclusions, making it hard to generalize results and leading to fierce debate.

Deep Impact Kicks Off Fourth Of July With Deep Space Fireworks
After 172 days and 431 million kilometers (268 million miles) of deep space stalking, Deep Impact successfully reached out and touched comet Tempel 1. The collision between the coffee table-sized impactor and city-sized comet occurred at 1:52 a.m. EDT. Mission scientists expect the project will answer basic questions about the formation of the solar system, by offering a better look at the nature and composition of the frozen celestial travelers known as comets.
