Brighter Model For Global Warming: Some Pollutants Actually Slow Warmi
Environmental chemist Scot Martin has made surprising findings on the effect of the particles responsible for acid rain on the amount of solar energy reaching the Earth's surface. If his research is correct, ammonium sulfate particles in the atmosphere act as tiny mirrors, reflecting sunlight back into space.

Carving New Frontiers For Ion-Beam Technology
An ion-beam system that simultaneously combines focused beams of electrons and positive ions promises to improve the versatility, efficiency, and economy of this important technology. The new system was developed by researchers at the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, who report its principles and applications in the November 8, 2004 issue of Applied Physics Letters.

Potential New Target For Skin Cancer Treatment
When normal skin cells become a melanoma tumor, they sometimes turn on genes not usually found in the skin. According to researchers at the University of Virginia Health System, some of these genes are normally active in the male testis at the time sperm are formed. The genes, called cancer-testis antigens, could be useful targets for drugs that could selectively kill a melanoma tumor, while sparing the rest of the body's tissues.

High Doses Of Vitamin E Boost Rat Survival Rate 40%; Brain Function, N
Two-year-plus study shows vitamin E supplementation from week 28 increased male rats' median lifespan 40% and maximal lifespan 17%, "a delay in the almost linear decay in mice survival."Subjects' performance in neuromuscular and exploratory tests increased significantly at both 52 and 78 weeks. Brain alpha-tocopherol content increased 2.5-fold while offsetting the decline of various mitochondrial functions by 37%-66%. Results were described as supporting the "free radical"theory of aging and related "specificity"concept.
