Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. It is a small city completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles in southern California that is famous for being the home of many movie actors and actresses. The city covers 14.7 km² and as of the 2000 census it had a total population of 33,784.

Beverly Hills has been featured in many movies, including the Beverly Hills Cop series, and television shows, including The Beverly Hillbillies and Beverly Hills 90210. Regarding this last show, 90210 is an actual zip code in the city, and the show has made it arguably the most famous zip code in the world. Ironically, most of 90210 actually lies within the city limits of Los Angeles; however, the US Postal Service considers all addresses in that ZIP code to be Beverly Hills addresses.

Beverly Hills derives its unique personality from its being favored by show business people; it’s true that many actors, writers, directors, and producers live there and take part in its civic life. Many professional people -- doctors, lawyers -- have homes and offices there also. The Beverly Hills Unified School District, with its four elementary schools and Beverly Hills High School, boasts particularly high academic achievement.

The dominant politics is liberal Democratic, and the city has a strong Jewish community.

The fight to preserve Beverly Hills as a separate city, to keep it from being swallowed up by Los Angeles, involved a number of famous actors of the 1930’s, including the honorary mayor, Will Rogers.

Sea Slug Mixes Chemical Defense Before Firing At Predators
When threatened by predators, sea slugs defend themselves by ejecting a potent inky secretion into the water consisting of hydrogen peroxide, ammonia and several types of acids. A team of researchers with the Atlanta-based Center for Behavioral Neuroscience (CBN) has found that this secretion is produced from normally inert chemicals stored separately in two glands. The discovery was published in the Dec. 16 on-line edition of the Journal of Experimental Biology.

Fat Hormone May Contribute To Longevity
Both humans and mice that manage to live to a ripe, old age show a clear change in their glucose metabolism, but it's unclear whether this change alone can increase lifespan. Using a mouse model of longevity scientists report that changes in metabolism can indeed increase longevity. They demonstrated that long-lived Snell dwarf mice burn less glucose and more fatty acids during periods of fasting, and as a result produce fewer free radicals.

Penn Museum Begins Ground-breaking Project To Create Underground Image

Making Plant Cells Work Like Miniature Factories
Imagine being able to control how and what a plant produces at a cellular level ... tiny factories to produce just about anything.By understanding how metabolism takes place within plant cells, researchers at the US Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory hope to be able to harness and manipulate the chemical reactions to produce different materials -- sustainable alternatives to petroleum sources for chemicals and raw materials for industrial, pharmaceutical and energy uses.

[Scary] Pregnant woman says 'maternal instinct' helped her kill attack
FORT MITCHELL, Ky. - A pregnant woman who killed her attacker said a maternal instinct helped her fight off the woman who investigators believe was after her unborn child."I do believe that I fought harder because it was for my child,"Sarah Brady told ABC's "Good Morning America"in interviews aired Sunday and Monday. "It is a maternal instinct to protect your child to the very end."Katherine Smith, 22, died Thursday after luring Brady to her apartment to pick up a package supposedly delivered to the wrong address. When Smith pulled out a knife and attacked the pregnant woman, Brady fought back, striking Smith on the head with an ash tray and stabbing her three times with her own knife, police said. Brady, 26, said she didn't know Smith before the two met at Smith's apartment and can't be certain why Smith wanted to kill her."I really am not sure what was going through her mind,"Brady told ABC. "The only thing I thought was that she was going to kill me and my child and that is the only thing that ran through my mind."

One Gene Variant Puts Stressed Women At Risk For Depression; Has Oppos
One version of a gene puts women who are under chronic stress at risk for more severe depressive symptoms. But among men, the same gene variant appeared to be protective against depression. In fact, men with the opposite gene variant were the ones who experienced more depressive symptoms when under chronic stress. The researchers analyzed two independent samples of healthy individuals for the presence of a genetic variant that regulates levels of serotonin -- a neurotransmitter that is linked to health in numerous ways, including emotion regulation.
