Big dumb booster

Big Dumb Boosters (BDB) are a general class of launch vehicle built around the idea that it is cheaper to build and operate a large, strong, heavy rocket of simple design than it is to build a smaller, ligher, more cleverly-designed one. The large one, though less efficient, is cheaper in real life since it is easier to build, operate and less likely to break.

As an example, Russian rockets are closer to the BDB concept than their American counterparts. American rockets tend to be built of the most modern, lightest materials available and to extremely tight tolerances. Many of them require very careful handling to avoid being damaged while on the ground. Russian rockets, on the other hand, tend to be built more heavily. They are built with larger margins of strength and to looser tolerances. They make up for the decrease in efficiency by simply being a bit larger.

Unfortunately, few current rockets are big or dumb enough to really put the concept to a true test. All American rockets are derived from ICBMs which seriously calls into question their 'dumbness'. Russian rockets are hard to compare as accurate cost figures are not available.

Researchers Discover That Sheep Need Retroviruses For Reproduction
A team of scientists from Texas A&M University and the University of Glasgow Veterinary School in Scotland has discovered that naturally occurring endogenous retroviruses are required for pregnancy in sheep. In particular, a class of endogenous retroviruses, known as endogenous retroviruses related to Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus or enJSRVs, are critical during the early phase of pregnancy when the placenta begins to develop.

Obsession With Weight May Not Be Tied To An Eating Disorder
In a new study on Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) -- a distressing or impairing preoccupation with an imagined or slight defect in one's appearance -- researchers from Bradley Hospital and Brown Medical School found that individuals who are concerned about their weight are more impaired than those whose appearance-concerns are not weight-related. This is particularly important, as weight-related preoccupations have at times not been considered diagnostic of BDD.

Specific Neurons Involved In Memory Formation Identified
Scientists have unlocked one of the secrets of how memory is formed. Working with a unique breed of transgenic mice, the new study has shown for the first time that the same neurons activated during fear conditioning are, in fact, reactivated during memory retrieval. The findings could potentially be used to uncover precisely how drugs such as antidepressants work in the brain, allowing clinicians to more accurately evaluate various treatment options.

Cell Mutations That Lead To Apoptosis May Contribute To Aging In Mamma
A University of Florida study has found that mutations in the mitochondria caused by obesity and lack of exercise -- not oxidative stress from free radicals -- may be a key factor in the aging process.

Shake And Stir To Make Granular Materials Change Phases
In an experiment originally planned for the International Space Station, physicists at Duke University have devised a controlled, measurable method to make a container of granules -- in this case plastic beads -- "freeze"into the equivalent of a solid-state crystal, or "melt"into the equivalent of a fluid, by alternating the rates that the beads are stirred or shaken.
