Metal extractor fans Bacteria grab metals, how? Some States Welcome National ID Officials from New Jersey and California say life will be easier when we all get government-issued cards mandated by the Real ID Act. Ryan Singel reports from the RSA Conference. Changes In Clinical Progression To AIDS In Patients On HAART Therapy Although clinical progression to AIDS of patients infected with Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has declined since the introduction of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), there is little data on the changes in incidence of AIDS-defining events during the first few years of therapy. A new study following 12,574 individuals over the course of three years of HAART and tracking the incidence and type of these AIDS-defining events appears in the February 28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. More Sick Leave Given To Men By Male GPs Compared With Female Counterp Male patients are given more certified sick leave by male doctors compared with the amount of sick notes given to females by female doctors, a new study has revealed. Mild mental disorders (MMDs) such as depression and anxiety were the commonest cause of complaint by women, followed by musculoskeletal problems for which males sought a higher proportion of medical attention. The research revealed however, that male patients were granted a longer amount of sick leave for MMDs compared with female patients, by doctors of both genders groups. Critically Endangered Amur Leopard Captured A rare Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis), one of only an estimated 30 left in the wild has been captured and health-checked by experts from a consortium of conservation organizations, before being released. Rapid, Low-Cost DNA Testing University of Rochester Professor Lewis Rothberg received a NYSTAR grant to continue working on a recent discovery by his group: how to rapidly test DNA to improve our health and make sure we're drinking clean water and eating uncontaminated food. Rothberg's new method can help forensics labs identify criminals, test water, and identify harmful genetic sequences in medical research. Rothberg's innovative procedure quickly and inexpensively identifies genetic sequences in any sample of DNA. Method Shows How Precisely Gene Expression Signals Are Copied DNA Repl A group of University of Washington researchers has devised a method that combines DNA sampling and mathematical modeling to find out how accurately patterns of methylation, a process that can control how genes are expressed, are copied during DNA replication. Tiny 'Gas-flow' Sensor Has Industrial, Environmental Applications Researchers at Purdue University have shown how to create a new class of tiny sensors for applications ranging from environmental protection to pharmaceutical preservation. Aviators Beware: Lasers About Used for a range of tasks from marking dates on butter to cutting gems, lasers are key components in compact disc and DVD players. They're getting cheaper, easier to acquire and more powerful. That could put pilots at risk. IBM Advancement To Spawn New Generation Of Chips IBM has announced it has developed a long-sought improvement to the transistor -- the tiny on/off switch that serves as the basic building block of virtually all microchips made today.Working with AMD and its other development partners Sony and Toshiba, the company has found a way to construct a critical part of the transistor with a new material, clearing a path toward chip circuitry that is smaller, faster and more power-efficient than previously thought possible.
