Clinical Trial To Test Stem Cell Approach For Children With Brain Inju A unique clinical trial will gauge the safety and potential of treating children suffering traumatic brain injury with stem cells derived from their own bone marrow starting early next year at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital. The clinical trial is the first to apply stem cells to treat traumatic brain injury. It does not involve embryonic stem cells. Red Blood Cell Transfusions Could Increase Risk Of Heart Attack Or Str Scientists have found that red blood cell transfusions given to people having heart surgery could increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. The study looked at the association between red blood cell transfusion and adverse outcomes in over 8,500 cardiac surgery patients over eight years. New Theory Tests Sex Ratios Under Asymmetrical Local Mate Competition In a new study featured in the September issue of The American Naturalist, David M. Shuker (University of Edinburgh) and colleagues show that females alter the sex ratio they produce on a host by considering whether there are already eggs on the host they are using and if there are other eggs already laid on other hosts in the patch. New Class Of Antibiotics Effective Against Drug-resistant Bacteria Dis A peptide identified in a fungus found in northern European pine forests possesses as much power as penicillin or vancomycin, according to an international team of researchers including Michael Zasloff, M.D., Ph.D. of Georgetown University Medical Center and Robert Lehrer, M.D. of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, both highly respected antimicrobial peptides researchers. The researchers isolated "plectasin,"the first defensin ever found in fungi. Moose Tops Swede's Space Menu International Space Station inhabitants will be stuffing their faces Scandinavian style after the first Swedish astronaut docks. The intrepid Swede plans meals of moose meat, gingerbread and "space yogurt." In Furthermore. Two Milestones For Argo Ocean 'Robots': Global Array 2/3 Complete, 55, The free-floating Argo "robot oceanographers,"a successful observation program that began in 2000 and is part of the global observing system to monitor Earth's oceans, reached two milestones: two-thirds completion of the international global array and the collection of nearly 55,000 profiles by the U.S. floats. Chemical Compound Found In Tree Bark Stimulates Growth, Survival Of Br Researchers have identified a compound in tree bark that mimics the chemical reactions of a naturally occurring molecule in the brain responsible for stimulating neuronal cell signaling. The tree bark compound, known as gambogic amide, behaves much like Nerve Growth Factor, a molecule found in the brain. NGF binds to TrkA, a neuronal receptor, and activates neuronal signaling. It is known that the loss of TrkA density correlates with neuronal atrophy and severe cognitive impairment such as that associated with Alzheimer's disease. Fat Cells Send Message That Aids Insulin Secretion The body's fat cells help the pancreas do its job of secreting insulin, according to new research. This previously unrecognized process ultimately could lead to new methods to improve glucose metabolism in type 2 diabetic or insulin-resistant people.
