B-15A Iceberg's Close Encounter Monitored By Envisat
Some anticipated the 'collision of the century': the vast, drifting B15-A iceberg was apparently on collision course with the floating pier of ice known as the Drygalski ice tongue. Whatever actually happens from here, Envisat's radar vision will pierce through Antarctic clouds to give researchers a ringside seat.

Rumsfeld Hangs It Up
After six years at the Pentagon, oft-reviled Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld resigns in the face of the Democrat's midterm victory and controversy over the Iraq war. He will be replaced by former CIA director Robert Gates.

Vast Cloud Of Antimatter Traced To Binary Stars
Astronomers may have solved one of the most vexing mysteries in our Milky Way: the origin of a giant cloud of antimatter surrounding the galactic center. Integral found that the cloud extends farther on the western side of the galactic center than it does on the eastern side. This imbalance matches the distribution of a population of binary star systems that contain black holes or neutron stars, strongly suggesting that these binaries are churning out at least half of the antimatter, and perhaps all of it.

Primate Virus Jumps Species Barrier To Humans For First Time In Asia
Scientists have identified the first reported case in Asia of primate-to-human transmission of simian foamy virus (SFV), a retrovirus found in macaques and other primates. The infection took place at a monkey temple in Bali, Indonesia. Even though SFV may not prove dangerous to humans, the scientists warn that the dense human and primate populations in Asia could lead to other primate-borne viruses jumping the species barrier and causing human disease.

Immune System Cells Linked To Heart Failure
A study in mice shows the immune system and, more specifically, cells recruited from it are key players in the muscle dysfunction that results in some forms of heart failure.

Painful Condition Affecting Kidney Failure Patients Increases Risk Of
A painful and debilitating condition that affects patients with kidney failure may be more common than previously believed and appears to be strongly associated with prior exposure to certain contrast agents used in imaging studies. In addition, individuals with this syndrome -- called nephrogenic systemic fibrosis -- appear to have a significantly increased risk of dying.

The First State of the Carbon Cycle Report (SOCCR): The North American
Full text and executive summary of this November 2007 report that considers the amount and sources of carbon dioxide released in the air in North America and the amount of growing vegetation and soil organic matter that act as carbon sinks. Memory may decline rapidly even in stage before Alzheimer's disease
Memory and thinking skills may decline rapidly for people who have mild cognitive impairment, which is the stage before Alzheimer's disease when people have mild memory problems but no dementia symptoms, and even more rapidly when dementia begins, which is when Alzheimer's disease is usually diagnosed.

Researchers Describe New Cost-effective Method To Assess Sleep
Using information hidden in the beat-to-beat changes of the heart's electrical signals, researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) have developed an inexpensive method to assess the stability and quality of sleep, which could be used to help understand the mechanisms of sleep control and diagnose sleep disorders, as well as to test the efficacy of sleep aids and other medications.
