Do Migratory Birds 'See'The Magnetic Field? A visual pathway links brain structures active during magnetic compass orientation in migratory birds. Every year millions of migratory birds fly towards their wintering quarters and come back in next year´s spring to breed. Behavioral experiments have shown that the Earth´s magnetic field is the main orientation cue on their journeys. Nevertheless, surprisingly little is known about the neuronal substrates underlying these navigational abilities. New findings strongly support the hypothesis that migratory birds use their visual system to perceive the reference compass direction of the geomagnetic field and that migratory birds are thus likely to "see"the geomagnetic field. Squirrels Winning At Outwitting Trees' Survival Strategy If you look at evolutionary biology as a big game of "Survivor,"it's squirrels: one, spruce trees: zero. Researchers now report how red squirrels have figured out a way around the elaborate ruse trees have used to protect their crops of tasty seeds. The remarkable part: The squirrels are divining the arrival of bumper crops of spruce cones months before the cones ever materialize and then betting on those crops with the most expensive evolutionary collateral -- a second litter of pups. Many Americans Believe Unsubstantiated Claims About Cancer, Survey Fin A new study from American Cancer Society researchers finds a surprising number of Americans believe scientifically unsubstantiated claims concerning cancer, and that population segments suffering the greatest burden of cancer are the most likely to be misinformed. The Status of Women in the States This report "is designed to inform citizens about the progress of women in their state relative to women in other states, to men, and to the nation as a whole."Produced every two years, it covers politics, economics, health, rights, and demographics; not all states are covered in each report. The site includes national, best-and-worst, and economic data reports, as well as the biennial reports back to 2000. From the Institute for Women's Policy Research. Museum Rescues 'Endangered' Recordings In 1958, The Field Museum recorded information about 6,622 artifacts in a new Pacific collection acquired over 60 years. They used a "state-of-the-art"Walkie RecordAll and tapes called sonobands. Today, the Museum is digitizing these recordings. Much as eight-track cassettes have been relegated to the technological dustbin, Walkie RecordAlls and sonobands fell out in the 1970s. Today this technology is as imperiled as an endangered species, such as the pandas on display at the museum. Discovery May Help Predict When Toxoplasma Can Be Deadly Toxoplasma is arguably the most successful animal parasite on earth: It infects hundreds of species of warm-blooded animals, most notably half of humanity. Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have identified two of the proteins critical to its ability to thrive. Acidifying Soil Helps Plant Remove Cadmium, Zinc Metals Acidifying cadmium-contaminated soil can help a plant called alpine pennycress to remove even more cadmium and zinc from contaminated soil, Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and cooperating scientists report. [Odd] A Romanian couple has named their son Yahoo as a sign of gratitu Daily Libertatea said on Thursday Cornelia and Nonu Dragoman, both from Transylvania, met and decided they were meant for each other following a three-month relationship over the net. They married and had a baby this Christmas, whom they decided to name after one of the worldwide web's most popular portals."We named him Lucian Yahoo after my father and the net, the main beacon of my life,"Cornelia Dragoman was quoted as saying. Fruit &Nut Research and Information Center: Almond This site features a collection of publications related to almonds as an agricultural crop. Topics include almond varieties, the almond production process, pests and diseases, and production economics. From the Department of Pomology, University of California, Davis. Controlling Electrical Properties Of Organic Semiconductor Materials University of Rochester physicists have learned why Pentacene, the leading candidate for developing organic semiconductors, conducts electricity in inconsistent ways rather than with predictable electrical properties.
