Researchers Uncover New Way Nature Turns Genes On And Off Peering deep within the cells of fruit flies, developmental biologists at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia may have discovered a new way that genes are turned on and off during development. If they're right, and the same processes are at work in higher organisms, including mammals, the findings could eventually have implications for improving the understanding of a range of diseases, including childhood cancer. Search Technique For Images Recognises Visual Patterns Dutch researcher Mirela Tanase has developed a new technique for finding images using search engines. Her technique is based on how the human eye recognises objects. It can increase the success rate of certain search operations for objects from 10 to 70 percent. Measuring Air Quality Through Spectral Analysis Of Beam Of Light An Israeli-Jordanian-US cooperative project aimed at measuring air quality in the area between the neighboring southern cities of Aqaba in Jordan and Eilat in Israel has been launched. As part of the experiment, scientists shine a powerful light projected from the Israeli side to the Jordanian side, the returning rays of which are then submitted to spectral analysis. Bacterial Spread All Down To Chance: Some Strains 'Just The Lucky Ones Scientists have discovered that factors such as human immunity and drug resistance are less important to the success of bacterial spread than previously thought.
