Researchers Estimate Significant Fatty Liver Disease In Children Until now little was known about the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in children. To gauge its occurrence a University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine-led team studied 742 autopsy reports and tissue analysis of San Diego County children aged two to 19 who died from traumatic accidents, homicide or suicide and had a medical examiner autopsy between 1993 and 2003. Ants, Not Evil Spirits, Create Devil's Gardens In The Amazon Rainfores For the first time, scientists have identified an ant species that produces its own natural herbicide to poison unwanted plants. The discovery, published in the Sept. 22 edition of Nature, was made by Stanford University biologists in the Amazon jungle of western Peru. The research focused on devil's gardens, mysterious tracts of vegetation that randomly appear in the Amazonian rainforest. Beach Pollution Is Worst During New And Full Moon A new study of 60 beaches in Southern California suggests that water pollution varies with the lunar cycle, reaching the highest levels when tides are ebbing during the new and full moon. The findings could help beachgoers and managers better assess the potential risk of swimming.
