Biogeography

Biogeography is the science which aims at documenting and understanding spatial patterns of biodiversity.

It can be defined as the study of distribution and pattern of variation in numbers and kinds of living organisms.
Biogeography is a synthetic science, related to geography, biology, geology, climatology, and ecology. It is usually not an experimental science, as the spatial and temporal scales makes experiments difficult, but rather a science of observation.

Some fundamentals in biogeography are

  • evolution (change in genetic composition of a population)
  • extinction (disappearance of a species)
  • dispersal (movement of populations away from their point of origin)

Self-assembled Nano-sized Probes Allow Penn Researchers To See Tumors
Nano-sized particles embedded with bright, light-emitting molecules have enabled researchers to visualize a tumor more than one centimeter below the skin surface using only infrared light. A team of chemists, bioengineers and medical researchers based at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Minnesota has lodged fluorescent materials called porphyrins within the surface of a polymersome, a cell-like vesicle, to image a tumor within a living rodent.

New Finding Bubbles To Surface, Challenging Old View
Chemical engineers have discovered a fundamental flaw in the conventional view of how liquids form bubbles that grow and turn into vapors, which takes place in everything from industrial processes to fizzing champagne.

Jefferson Researcher's Results Show Promise For Metastatic Eye Melanom
When melanoma of the eye spreads to the liver, patients have few good options. Surgery is frequently impossible, and chemotherapy hasn't proven effective. But now, by simultaneously revving up the immune system and choking off the tumor's oxygen supply, oncologists at Jefferson Medical College have shown promising results from an early, phase 1-2 clinical trial of a novel treatment for uveal melanoma that has spread to the liver.

NIST Physicists Coax Six Atoms Into Quantum 'Cat' State
Scientists at the Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have coaxed six atoms into spinning together in two opposite directions at the same time, a so-called Schrödinger "cat"state that obeys the unusual laws of quantum physics. The ambitious choreography could be useful in applications such as quantum computing and cryptography, as well as ultra-sensitive measurement techniques, all of which rely on exquisite control of nature's smallest particles.
