Pre-kindergarten TB Testing Not Cost Effective, Study Finds The health care system in California could save nearly $1.3 million a year with few adverse public health effects if it discontinued universal tuberculosis skin testing of children entering kindergarten, according to a new study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco. Internationally Adopted Children Shed Light On How Babies Learn Langua Each year, about 40,000 children are adopted across national lines, primarily by families from North America and Western Europe. Although most are infants and toddlers, thousands of older children are also adopted. Jesse Snedeker of Harvard University believes that these older children can help us understand how infants learn their native language. Early language development follows a predictable series of milestones. Babies initially say one word at a time, and mostly use nouns ("ball") or social words ("hi"). As they grow older their sentences become longer and more complex, as verbs ("take") and grammatical words ("about") begin to appear. Cancer Cells More Likely To Genetically Mutate When cells become cancerous, they also become 100 times more likely to genetically mutate than regular cells, researchers have found. The findings may explain why cells in a tumor have so many genetic mutations, but could also be bad news for cancer treatments that target a particular gene controlling cancer malignancy. Number Of Cases Of Most Vaccine-preventable Diseases In US At All-time A comparison of illness and death rates for 13 vaccine-preventable diseases in the US, before and after use of the vaccine, indicates there have been significant decreases in the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths for each of the diseases examined, according to a new study. Commonly Found Contaminant May Harm Nursing Infants Scientists have shown that perchlorate -- an industrial pollutant linked to thyroid ailments -- is actively concentrated in breast milk. Their findings suggest that perchlorate contamination of drinking water may pose a greater health risk than previously realized.
