Unusual Material That Contracts When Heated Is Giving Up Its Secrets T Most solids expand when heated, a familiar phenomenon with many practical implications. Among the rare exceptions to this rule, the compound zirconium tungstate stands out by virtue of the enormous temperature range over which it exhibits so-called "negative thermal expansion,"contracting as it heats up and expanding as it cools, and because it does so uniformly in all directions. Follow The Energy: New Technique Enables Scientists To Track Molecular Scientists have been able to follow the flow of excitation energy in both time and space in a molecular complex using a new technique called two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy. While holding great promise for a broad range of applications, this technique has already been used to make a surprise finding about the process of photosynthesis. Waggle Dance Controversy Resolved By Radar Records Of Bee Flight Paths In the 1960s, Nobel Prize winning zoologist, Karl von Frisch, proposed that honeybees use dance (the"waggle dance") as a coded message to guide other bees to new food sources.
